FOKKER D-VIII

Here's another Fokker that I want to enter for this GB. Haven't decided on Lt.z.See Theo Osterkamp of II Marine Field Jasta, or Lt. Richard Wenzl of Jasta 6 yet, but i wanted to post this entry so I could start on it.

Another Battleaxe kit to play with. Here's the unopened box with some plans I made up (from the Windsock Datafile #25) to see how it stacks up to scrutiny....and to see how much surgery it would need.

Opened the box, and cut/cleaned some major pieces to see what they looked like. Except for the prop and decals (like the D-VII kit) I was completely stoked on the quality of this kit. Nice resin engine/guns and great PE fret to go with it. Sweet! :lol: Again, I have a spare prop from my other Fokkers, and I'll be making my own 5-color lozenge decals if I can't purchase them in this scale. Check it out;

Laid the pieces over the plans, and they weren't close.....they were exact! Wheels, cowling, everything.(except the prop) :lol: Whoohoo! I'm completely impressed and stoked about this kit,....lotsa potential, and an easy build.

This plane uses the 4-color lozenge pattern,....and I'll be printing my own if i can't find these to purchase in this scale. Here's a sample off the Airizona models website to show how much different it looks fom the kit supplied stuff.

This is the front cover off the Windsock Datafile #25 to show what this might be close to looking like. Ooooooh, if I hope I can find a pic of that black/yellow bumblebee striped paintscheme on the box top (for Osterkamp.....my refs show him having a plain factory scheme, which would be cool too) I'll do that. I believe it's fictional though? Anyway, WHEW!....now I've got all my entries lined up for this GB, and a WWI work-area set apart from the SR-71 hangar.....so I can again proceed with both. I like being organized. :lol:

More pics as things progress! Later, Russ

  • 2 weeks later...

Alrighty, this rolling stone ain't gonna gather no moss....so it's on to the next build! :P This build won't be quite the slam-dunk as the triplanes, cuz it's a limited run kinda thing methinks? :lol: Also, I'm going to be putting PE (!!!!!) on this.....oooooh the humanity, and my poor super-glued together fingers ;) ....along with a smattering of resin pieces to leaven out the mix. Cool!

Here's the pieces laid out for me to gander at/hmmm and haw about/ and generally just slap myself in the forehead trying to figure out. heh heh.

Lessee,....guess I'll start with the resin engine. Need to do a bit of clean-up, but this definitely has potential. Gotta make up my own rocker arms,....and boy I sure hope those intake runners will fit. We'll see. :P Treating myself to some waffles and little smokey sausages tonight, so I gotta scram. Just wanted to post a few pics, and get the cobwebs dusted off tis thread before I start. So it begins;.........

Man, Russ, you are on fire! You've built more kits in the last month than I've built all year, and you're still going! This WW1 bug has really got you, and you're churning out some wonderful models. Now there's another one to look forward to. I'm sure you've already wrapped up the LSP record for the most number of completed entries in a Group Build (or anywhere on LSP at all really...).

Hey Russ,

Check the link to an Aerodrome thread on an Avis E.V/D.VIII. The builder is a guy named Bertl and he's a master builder.Take a look and let me know what you think.I'm impressed enough to have ordered the kit myself.

Regards,

Gregory Jouette

Hey, cool link Gregory! I couldn't see the pics of the model, cuz I'm not a member....this is the only site I've ever joined on the internet....but I DID find some fascinating stuff on lozenge patterns/colors. Gave me a headache reading thru so much minutae, but much was learned.(more than I would ever WANY to know on this subject! :P ) Now, I usually just show something like an already completed decal ready to put on a model....but methinks I'll go into the process a bit deeper for this thread. Because most of this model will be decals, and not painted, it seems kinda appropriate? :)

Here's some pics of some trial attempts at getting the 4-color pattern ready for printing this weekend. Did I say I was going to put a 5-color pattern on this earlier? Whups. That's what i get for getting my posts mixed up with the D-VII. :P This is the mess I had in front of me tonight;

Let me see if I can sort this pile of junk out for ya'll. I've been taking black/white patterns and trying out different colors to find something that looks 'right' to me. Not having access to any samples of real fabric,....and being too lazy to search on the net....has made this a hit/miss proposition, albeit a lot of fun! :P This is my 'version-2' pattern I had made up-printed on paper-and cut out next to the kit supplied decals. I just 'eye-balled' the colors for these, and didn't know if they were scale or not. Check it out;
