Hi Guys;

I thought I would post a mini build article here, as I have found that most of the techniques I use on my armour models ( confession time...Armour is my first love :o ) comes in very handy on my aircraft, and I also thought some of you guys may like to see it as it comes along.

I highly recommend building an armour kit if the subject matter tickles your fancy as it is alot of fun.

This Trumpeter kit is a superb example of a KV-II, with very accurate dimensions, and surprisingly good details for a model that comes in at £11.95 GBP. I have spent four nights so far on the construction and it has given me back a great result for very little effort. The fit is great and there are literally only three spots on the entire model that require filler.

This first pic shows one of the only spots where I added detail in the form of somr protective bars for the engine grille mesh...

I also decided I would add the barrel from Aber as it offered some very nice rifling inside the opening. It was a simple procedure to replace the kit barrel as I only had to saw off a small portion at the base, then attach the aber barrel to that. It was a bit of a pain in the arse cutting the kit barrel on the table held by hand so I went out and finally bought a table vise today :o

The kit offers you two options for the tracks, some decent vynil single piece jobbies, or some really nice injection link and length ones. I chose link and length and found they were really easy to work with and when they were on the model during the building of them, they looked surprisingly convincing.

I normally paint my tracks seperately from the tank so I had to figure out a way to assemble them arounf the test fit wheels then get them off again. I chose to leave the front run off and pull them off at the rear. This may have been a bad choice as they take alot of effort pulling over the teeth on the drive sproket so perhaps doing them the opposite way around will be easier next time...

Tonioght I went to it with the Alclad primer, and I do nut cut corners when I prime a model. I usually take a couple of hours to do it but it is one of the most important parts of building a model so it pays off in the end. I use Alclad because it is incredibly fine and does not obscure even the smallest of detail. Takes a while to get on but like I just said, it is worth it in the end. :o

Final pic for tonight.

I went to it with the Xtracolor 811 Russian Armour Green, mixed with quick drying thinners and a drop of rustins Terebene. It was completely dry in an hour and a half. I could get it to dry quicker, but for the purposes of shading I need the paint slightly damp so the colours melt together. the darker colour is simply the base colour with some black added to it.

Great looking tank, Jay!!!

I got one of those kits also, in the hopes of doing a quick build. Sure looks great in the box.

The unfortunate problem has been my house which has really been a slow build. Hopefully the light can be seen at the end of the tunnel as they are supposed to lay carpet next week. Soon after I hope to post some pics for you guys!

wow Jay...I've seen plenty of your armour builds in the past...the russian panther is scherweet.

The aber barrel is the go...nice rifling.

Gotta say though, I love the sloped armour and lack of shot traps in a KVII.

Have any of you guys seen what a man portable Javelin does to a Russian tank?

He He...we have those ( somewhere  )

Oh..here is one of my LST ( 1/25 Jagdpanther)...in diorama which my daughter insisted we keep. It was school project that started off as 'I need to build a sheep'...then turned into cutting up a box, airbrushing, cutting out clouds, multiple sheep, CA, white glue and Silver birch seeds etc etc...groan...its still in her bedroom.

Guilty!

I'm an armour builder too.

Totaly different style of modelling for me, I can get nearly all of a model built before painting starts.

Thought you might like to see a couple of my armour models.

I am currently working on an M1A2 Abrams.
