Roy Noras
Hi I wonder if the AVG markings for the old Revell P-40E kit are real or fictious? The plane is from 3rd PS, white 92 and flown by Robert 'Duke' Hedman. I can't find any reference to a P-40E with such markings. In the book 'Eagle Files 04: Tigers over China' by Thomas A. Tullis, pages 56 and 63 show a white 92, but it is a Curtiss Hawk 81-A2. In the book 'Flying Tigers Colors' by Carl Molesworth, the table on page 42 list white 92 as flown by Hedman, but it is a Curtiss Hawk 81-A2. The book is very nice, by the way. So I think it may be assumed that the Revell scheme is fictuous for a P-40E. Correct? Any options about this? RBrown
All the P-40 Es that were assigned to the AVG were assigned fuselage numbers 101 and up. The AVG did not reuse numbers, so 92 was never assigned to an AVG P-40 E. All of the early Revell 1/32 box art illustration was done by Jack Leynnwood and the art probably helped sell a lot of kits, but was not exactly accurate as to aircraft type. Incidentally, Leynnwood was a former USAAF pilot and had flown the P-40, although not in combat. Roy Noras
I really love that boxart!!! The kit was one of my first 1/32 planes. Actually I am starting a new project. I was thinking of building another P-40, but using the more modern kit from Hasegawa. As a tribute to the old Revell kit I would use the same markings as that one. I then started searching for pictures and some more info about the plane, which led me to the info mentioned above. (-: Roy
RBrown
Hasegawa's P-40 E is a great kit and it has markings for Ed Rector's machine, which is similar to that depicted on the original Revell box art... Earlier 104 even sported the Nationalist Chinese markings on the wings, which can barely be discerned in the photo below. Patrick HMD
Anyone know what color paint that is covering the national insignia on the side? Maybe a fresh dark green? Wouldn't it be on both sides? The profile calls it out as the same as the camo green but darker due to lack of weathering I guess. Am I answering my own question? Never seen that picture before. Good shot. Fred Jack
I know now how anal guys are over plane markings, but back then almost all modelers were teens. We were thrilled to even have a P-40 in 1/32, and there existed no aftermarket decals. Roy Noras
RBrown, very nice and informative pictures. Which book(s) are they from? Seems like I have to do the '104' or similar. But I'd would like to do one with Chinese markings on the wings, (-: Roy
Rick Griewski
This was my first 1/32 scale kit. Lawn cutting money went a long way back then. Rick Bill_S
