CANicoll
As i get ready to start on my Revell build, and with all of the build threads going on here, I thought it would be a good idea to try and capture the collective experience and thoughts of everyone in one place regarding suggested aftermarket bits for the new Revell P-51D. Not looking for commentary on if a suggested AM part is useful or not, but if you have actually used the AM bit, a comment on ease of implementation, gotcha's to look out for, the usual useful advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Chris
quang
Hi Chris, Ever the eager beaver, I ordered the Eduard Interior set before I even had the Revell kit in my hands. https://www.eduard.com/store/out/media/32920.pdf Now that I have both on my desk and about to start the build, I'm having a tinge of buyer's remorse. Not that the Eduard is useless (far from it) but the details on the Revell kit are so good that they make the Eduard set somewhat redundant. Of course I'll use it now that I have it. It does give some extra peps but nothing a little scratchbuilding would do. The only thing to save the day is the instrument panel which is at least as good as the Yahu. For once the inscriptions on the bezels are pale yellow (like on the real thing) instead of white. In retrospect, I'd rather use the money to buy a Barracuda set of block-patterned wheels. CANicoll
Quang, EXCELLENT! This is exactly the kind of advice I was hoping to see. Thanks for the posting - the block wheels (and their hubs) sounds like a good purchase. Chris Edited March 23, 2018 by CANicoll
1to1scale
Having built and completed one, the only two pieces that could be needed are a new IP, Yahu just released the "early" one for the Revell which wasn't available when I built mine, and a set of resin tires, just because the damn seam runs through the middle as usual. The cockpit is so well detailed, you dont really need any AM other than a nice IP and maybe a set of cockpit placard decals. Revel includes about 6 or 8 decals, but the Barracudacals will really liven up the cockpit. Other than the not-so-clear canopy, which there are no replacements available yet, that's about it. Edit: the Yahu IP is in stock at Squadron right now. I had both the True Details and the Brassin wheels, I used the True Details because I am saving the Brassin for my Tamiya mustang, but, the Brassin is nicer, you just need to decide if its twice the price nice. quang
To their advantage, Eduard has improved somewhat the printing of their pre-painted IP. The colours are good now sporting even a reproduction of the crackled finish of the real thing. And also a spot of gloss varnish on each bezel face. Here's a comparison between Revell's bezels and Eduard's. HTH Q CANicoll and coogrfan
mattlow
For me, a set of placards for the 'pit. Even though Revell give you a few, the Mustang 'pit is so crammed with them that it looks plain bare without them. I cheated and used stuff that was just the right shape which without the aid of a microscope looks fine. The wheels would benefit from some resin. As 1:1 says, the seam runs right through the tread pattern and my attempts at aligning and then tidying aren't that great. If I'd been more careful assembling them I may have got a better/acceptable result from the kit pieces. Matt coogrfan and CANicoll
Patrick HMD
That's a bit of a sticker shock price for that eduard panel. 32 dollars? That's more than I paid for the kit. I'll pass. MikeMaben
Dave Williams
Other than the IP, I found seat belts useful since the kit doesn't have any. Also, I like the Eduard exhausts as they are drilled out, although they need some small mods to work with the kit backing box piece that the exhausts attach to. Don't need the whole Eduard interior set. The ZOOM set is all I used or needed. Edited March 24, 2018 by Dave Williams

I have several Eduard sets for other planes that just don't look that great. I'm glad to see them stepping up their game.

Squadron has the Yahu IP for $11, plus 30% off, great deal! Although, you can get an acceptable panel using the kit decal, then putting a drop of clear yellow in each gauge. Eduard prices have become a bit wonky if you ask me. They are going to price themselves out of the market.

Guest
The only after market items I used were Barracuda wheels. I replaced the kit instrument panel, seat, and sliding canopy with Tamiya items. I think those items are the main things to replace Chris, but that's just me. (If you want a Tamiya canopy and instrument panel I have some in my "leftovers" box.) CANicoll
Hi John, Thanks! I need to look in my Tamiya boxes, but between the one I did build, and the one I still want to build should be covered on the Canopies. You know, I didn't even think about using the Tamiya IP but I know I have the early IP left over.. Hmmmmm probably the seat too... I wonder how many of the Tamiya parts will work on the Revell... The Barracuda wheels and tires showed up today (I ordered Friday at 3pm, SprueBrothers are on their game!). I need to finish off the Nieuport 17 and the SPAD XIII then the bench will be clear to start on Lou IV. Chris
