Wow, great work, that base really adds to it. Ive only don't a couple bases for individual models but the ones I have done were similar to this in being pre-made, only needing to be prepped and painted. The base colors ended up looking great. Will be cool to see the model on it all dolled up!

I think black basing is the way to go. It offers far more potential than pre shading, which invariably ends up looking artificial, forced & just too uniform. It also gives the dreaded "quilted" effect, which detracts from the paint scheme & weathering.

Thank you for the very kind comments everyone. I have completed the Corsair and base. Below are some photos of the finished model. I am guessing that it is also appropriate to post some photos in the finished model section also.
The photos were taken using my photo tent setup. The subtle shading shows up a bit better under diffused lighting. I made a very simple frame for the base, which turned out fairly well.
I'll start with a few medium distance shots.
