OK, having just learned that the Airfix FG1 Phantom is (slightly) borked due to the absence of outlet louvres on the top and bottom of the main intakes, and the louvred exit vent above the jet pipes, can I just confirm that the HKM rendition of this important airframe and much anticipated model will nor be suffering similar deficiencies?

I mean,  Monogram handled those issues perfectly well in 1977.

WTF is up with the modern LIDAR equipped kit designers Airfix have used?

“Kit designers” doesn’t necessarily imply someone who knows and understands aircraft. And LIDAR is great, but it’s not for fine detail like that. It’s for gross shapes.

I feel pretty confident that the HK kit, when it finally appears, will have the louvers on the intakes.

Getting me in the mood to get some diddy Airfix FG.1s. The 1/72 item is only a few weeks from release.

Will fuel the need while Jennings spends four years shaking his head in bewilderment at our enthusiasm.

Yes, seriously considering one myself; and did I see an FGR2 in the Airfix 2018 releases?  Just to scratch the itch whilst waiting for HKM in eager anticipation.

The kit's really super and Hasegawish in quality but, as Chek noted, the inlet louvres are missing. It might have been sorted with a few decals; unfortunately, in their haste Hannants have released three - yes three - data sheets, none of which have the louvres! AnnoyFing (as in F-in annoying).

I would thoroughly recommend the kit as a stocking filler pending the biggie. You can drop the BLC flaps, have the radome open and all sorts - I might well buy another two if I can stomach the idea of using the copious stencil data that comes with the kit. The Airfix decals are very good.

Nothing I’ve seen tells me the Airfix kit is any better than the Fujimi kit from 30 years ago. And it has the louvers.

So you've not bought one?
The Airfix comes with inlet and compressor face detail, optional folded wings, optional deployed L/E flaps, optional radar fit, more accurate cockpit, neater windshield installation and better decals. The louvres can be simulated using decals - once available - which I'd actually prefer in 1/72 scale. And a stack of very nice Xtradecals.
Okay, the Fujimi has vinyl rubber tyres, which only I seem to rejoice in.

Yes, if I get to see it mine will almost certainly end up in XLI colours with the big EMI pod under it. Would be quite funky to have the option of outboard fuel/flash pods.

Interestingly, most of the more exotic pod gear was developed for TSR.2, but with the laser linescanner replaced by IRLS.

Nothing I’ve seen tells me the Airfix kit is any better than the Fujimi kit from 30 years ago. And it has the louvers.

While it's difficult to tell from the available images, it seems to me that Airfix have captured the intakes better than the Fujimi interpretation (apart from the louvres).

There's a definite 'shoulder' to the Spey intakes which rises to aft of the cockpit, which together with the forward slant of the intake lip, gives the forward portion a slightly rotated down look. It's slightly suggested on the Fujimi (and Hasegawa 1/48) kits, but really needs to be as boldly portrayed as Airfix have done. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a suitably angled illustration. But here's Airfix with the real thing.

Similarly, the Fujimi aft fuselage underside has to rise up to meet the jet pipes, instead of being the straight through covers for the power outlets that Matchbox portrayed correctly in 1975.

Regrettably, it seems that with a modern kit, there will be some features that let it down. What's most annoying is when it's something that was never a problem for previous kits.

With the Airfix FG1, it's the intake and engine bay missing louvers, With the ZM Phantoms, there's that aft fuselage crease that was never an issue with the Hasegawas or Monograms. With the Academy it's the stabilators and those ACS nose intakes and a bulky arse. It's exasperating.

Mind you, 30 something years ago I built dozens of the original clunky white plastic Airfix F-4B and its subsequent C/D/E/J variants in a bunch of colour schemes and decals stolen from other kits in a frenzy of whatiffers including Swedish ice camo and Danish tat and Starfighter silver with white wings (upper and lower).

'Appen we were poor, but we were 'appy, at least when t' cardboard box we lived in weren't leaking in water from t' lake.

I just hope t' God HKM get it as right as humanly and computerly possible

HKM will be the only game in town, so obliged choice and there will be no problem of comparisons. always better than spend 1000 dollars for this stuff
