Braver man than I, but I must admit I did enjoy building an Airfix Anson when I was knee high to a grasshopper and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Cheers

Dennis

Yep, me too, and I also did the Aeroclub C19.

A classic aircraft, watching with interest Max.

I always liked the Anson. When I was a young boy, there were plenty of these in derelict condition scattered all over country airfields and farmyards in Western Canada.

It seemed like almost every grain farmer bought one or two surplus Ansons after the war, flew them till they broke then pushed them back into the weeds with the old farm equipment where they rotted into a pile of tubes and rotten wood.

This should bring back some memories. I'm watching this one, Max.

I hope so Radders, re-creating the undercart will be a challenge from scratch, or I might just chicken out and do a wheels up flying Anson! I'm especially looking forward to doing the interior using Albion Alloys Connect-o system......that's the theory anyway!! :)

Looking forward to it! If it's any help, I *may* have some photos of Ansons that have visited shows, I know there was one at Cosford last year or the year before. I will check my pics for you to see if there is anything that may help. :)

I know that feeling Ernie. When I was a lad I used to visit Thruxton quite often. It was a small ex-wartime drome but I could wander about freely and in one corner there were two decomposing Mosquitoes. I tore off a strip of the fabric from the wings which included colours of the roundels but I've no recollection of what happened to that precious souvenir!

Thanks Radders, all donations very gratefully accepted!

  • 4 weeks later...

At last!  A day to do some modelling, and research.  I'm currently re-reading Winkle Brown's "Wings on my sleeve", this time of course I clocked his reference to flying in an Anson when he was at the RAE Farnborough to examine and assess some of the captured German aircraft.  Ha ah thought I, RAE eh.....so I went through the British-use section of the Anson File (thanks Tim! :) ) for entries of Anson's being allocated there, only three could be found so I picked the latest one as the most likely:

....EG590, a Mk 1 built 1943ish.

I'm using Classic Airframes 1/48th kit as my "blue print", fortunately I have an unmade one:

....and I'm scaling it up from 1/48th to 1/32nd for all the detail stuff....I understand the up-scale ratio is 150%.

So today I've done the initial cutting of the structure from the plastic sheet ready for sanding back, but just for fun I loosely taped it together, it's quite big, and no obviously warped, deformed or ill-matching halves...

I'm starting on the internals, I've been itching to try the the Connect-o from Albion Alloys and it works beautifully!

I scanned the resin side walls from the 1/48th kit, did the maths with the length of each tubular section then enlarged the scanned image to scale.  This will be my pattern for constructing the framework and I'll be doing the same for the floor, IP etc etc.

More free time on Friday I hope!

Glad you think so chaps, I'm loving it! Whilst I've enjoyed what I've done so far with the Tamiya Spitfire (ie the engine), I think the fact that it fits so well together rather lost my attention. There's no doubt that I'll finish it in time but this Anson build really ticks all the boxes for me! The two internal tubular frames are nearly finished.

The time-gremlins have struck again, no chance of modelling till Monday afternoon at the earliest (visitors! :( ) but here is the port framing complete apart from a little tidy up with a file.  It's a very rigid structure and will take some shaping to fit the inside of the fuselage, very happy with the outcome of Connect-o:

This is what I'm aiming to achieve:

I don't know whether the RAE's Ansons had all the navigator training tables and gear, probably not but this is a typical set up so that's what I'll be doing.
