Trumpeter MiG-29A

The huge box turned up today and I have been trying to find a review of the kit, so far without success.

My starting point was a Trumpeter MiG-29M, bought a few years ago, along with an Avionix cockpit. I subsequently discovered that this was not the standard every day, common or garden variety of MiG-29 that I wanted and so I waited until the A model came out.

I sold my 'M' for £55 at SMW last year but hung on to the cockpit as I understand its essentially the same for the A/K/M varieties?

Now I have my A I was wondering what, if any are the major issues? I have read some threads on LSP but haven't really been able to get the bones out of what needs to be done to make the kit 100%. In truth, that may not matter to me because I believe I now have a much better starting point than the 'M' kit so I am broadly happy but I would be grateful for some condensed opinion please.

In terms of markings, the kit Russian AF markings look quite attractive but then I also like the Luftwaffe markings and also the Polish markings, especially those with the large squadron badge on the centre section.

Any guidance/opinion would be much appreciated

Thanks

Simon

Cold War Studio have a cockpit/canopy in development.

There are a few resin wheels available - Zacto, Armoury, HAD - but the Northstar comes with a nose wheels debris guard. Zacto produce a number of other goodies.

I'd definitely say its from the A team.

Having bought all of Zacto's resin id be happy to say the exhausts are a definite everything thing else is for the perfectionist only.

The radome is another easy addon but again its for those keen of eye.

Trumpeter have corrected all the missiles and they will be very usable on any Russian 1/32 kit however Zactos are works of art but dimensionally and detail wise Trumps are light years beyond those in the original SU-27.

Realistically most of the resin is overkill and other than a seat plus burner cans you will get a stunningly good Mig-29 out of box only the most exactly Mig-29 expert could find the most minor fault with.

The Cold War studios K-36 is beautiful and im not sure i will buy any cockpits as the kit cockpit is very nice with plenty of detail fits great and is a great starting point.

Now that being said Zactos missile rails are a work of art and its a shame to hide them with his beautiful resin missiles.

I have looked at the canopy from 45 angles and still cant see a problem with it and wont be touching mine with resin or vac or anything.

The two seater just arrived and the C is about to be released so we are pretty lucky to finally have a great family of Mig-29's.

The two biggest things I found with my build awhile back was the rear upper engine bumps were not quite right and the LEX tapers too soon due to the cockpit being a little too wide. The fit was overall pretty good except for the landing gear was fickle. Builds up into a nice kit.

I've built the "K" version with Avionix cockpit. It won't let you close a canopy due to equipment box behind ejection seat is too wide.

And no, the "M" cockpit is not suitable for "A"

Brings back memories. Not 100 % accurate but it does look like a Mig once done. Big fellow.....I think the windshield area, burner cans, intake and the spine had issues.....but I built it as is.....as it was still better oob compared with the Revell kitty imho....

What I liked about the kit was the landing gear design. It holds the weight well.....happy building it is impressive once done

Thanks for the help guys! I must say that I had not come across Cold War Studio before so that's a revelation. I see that the Avionix cockpit is no good for an 'A' - although it is listed as suitable for the A/K/M  so I would be interested to know what is wrong? Also, because importing from the USA is getting so expensive, even though I've bought Zacto stuff in the in the past, I am more likely to use what's available in the UK so what do 'we' think about the Quickboost K-36? It looks good to me!!

Thanks

The K/M are third generation versions and the IPs have a glass cockpit with large MFDs, while the A model has analog instruments and a small square radar scope.

The QB seat is nice, and fits very well in the Mig-29A cockpit. If I could only get one thing for the kit, it would be the QB seat.

Not meaning to hijack, but I'm still hoping somebody will make wing folds for the Trumpeter K. Naval jets don't look right parked with the wings down.

And has anyone tried to see if the Zacto jet nozzles for the Trumpy are the same as the pig's lipstick cosmetic set for the Revell?

I have the Zacto Revell UB "correction" set and plan on using the nozzles on the A, instead, and in turn using the Trumpy plastic ones on the Zacto replacement resin engine nacelles.

Chris says the exhausts are slightly modified versions of the exhausts made for the K/M kits, which were also in the Revell correction sets.

Okay, so I'll likely swap the Trumpeter K and Zacto-for-Revell UB nozzles, and consider getting the new full-length Zacto's for the A.

I'm guessing the new Zactomodels nozzles for the MiG-29A will be out soon. They look very good in the ARC post - thanks for the link Dave.

Tony,

The exhausts for the Trumpeter A, as well as the other parts, are currently available.

Darren, very excited to hear that the C is about to hit, any more detail on that? It's the version I plan on building.

Cheers,

Marcel

I can't wait to see what you do with the Fulcrum, any ideas for a specific plane?  I know I've got mine already picked out.
