Trumpeter Swordfish in 815 SQ colors, Egypt/North Africa 1943

It's been almost 2 months since i've done anything model wise. Time to get building. I did buy a Revell He-219 for the GB, turns out it is too big to fit in my display case. I have this Swordfish, been kicking around the stash for a long time, 6 years? Should be aged enough to be built.  Doing research i've found there were quite a few Swordfish involved in night missions mostly u-boat/patrol craft hunting., with attack/nuisance raids as well.  The Trumpeter kit has markings for a night attack bird based in Egypt/North Africa.

Lovely !

I did the Trump Swordfish some years ago and I liked it. Only thing was that they want you to put some PE strip along the surface of the wing, something I have found was not there. Just leave it out. I did create problems for myself since I wanted to do a Bismark raid Swordfish, but bought the Mk II kit, so a little fixing was in order. But overall a VERY nice kit.

In an overseeable future my oldest daughter will move out and I will have a dedicated modeling room - when it comes to that I will be copying your 'frame wall' - that is such a good solution !!

Hello all!! Sorry for not keeping updated. Is definitely an unusual choice, not the first aircraft you think about when night attack/fighter is mentioned. This is a different build for me, this is the first biplane i'll build in over 50 years!! First and last one was an Airfix(?) Sopwith Camel. There aren't a lot of build threads to be found for reference, though for colors, i look at the 1/48 Tamiya and 1/72 Airfix builds. I've done a bit of dryfitting, so far it looks pretty good. It's a Trumpeter kit, so there are some issues. Trumpeter has lights in the leading edges of both lower, should be just the left. Should be slats in the leading edge of the upper wings, Trumpeter kinda represents these but could be better defined. Not a lot of rivets, what there is look pretty good. The ribbing on the wings, horizontals, and rudder look overdone, i have seen builds where the builder has tried to fill in between ribs, they look like they need a bit/lot of work. Cockpit looks pretty good, no restraints for the observer/gunner/bomb aimer. Weapons look OK. I won't be converting it to a MKIII, above my paygrade/capabilities, the subject i'm doing is a MKII so it'll be mostly OOB. Right now i'm looking into the color of the red inside the fuselage. My understanding is this is the primer applied on the outside bleeding through the linen and showing up inside. Typical British cockpit green will cover most, the red areas will first be painted a linen color(?) then i'll apply a red that will appear spotty. Hoping to start fitting and painting tomorrow. I have to say, there doesn't seem to be a large amount of parts, my last few builds have been a little challenging, so i'm kinda hoping this will be a fairly straightforward build.....though it is a Trumpeter kit....

You are correct about the red bleeding through the fabric, in the lower portion of the cockpit. Upper is all green. The red is a bit washed out, but the stringers are full strength red. I googled Fairey Swordfish "images" and got a good cockpit photo right away.

Great project!

There are lots of images available online, and because Trumpeter, Tamiya, Airfix and Revell produced kits, there are a lot of build threads to look into as well.

A big Stringbag, haven't seen one built ye, definitely going to follow this one......

I just need to get myself to the bench and start in on the kit!! Summer weather and distracted while doing searches really kill progress!!

I've been neglecting the Group Build, but i did manage to find time to get some stuff done. Cockpits are my weak point, started the build here. I have to say, the kit pit is pretty well detailed, there is room for improvement, but i'll be doing the pit basically OOB. Did need to remove flash from the parts, otherwise assembly was straightforward. Something lacking from the instructions were color callouts, i found a set of instructions online of the tamiya kit and used these to paint the pit. I tried a couple of new to me paints. I primed using Stynylrez grey. Sprayed nicely, seemed to stick well. Didn't get a chance to see how it stood up to masking tape, will try further in on the build. Also tried Vallejo Matt Varnish, had to thin quite a bit, but it sprayed well and was a very flat finish.Still have to do the pilots seat and instrument panel. The panel has decals in the kit sheet, i'm going to use Airscale gauges instead. I was going to add the pilots seat later, but i don't think it'll fit through the opening. A few pics.
