The hood needs to be riveted, technological holes will be added, this will greatly enliven the model, I have this Devuatin lying around, a cool toydewoitine-d-500.gif710x528-33286090-14615968-1712414161-1-0

Excellent photo, Andrey.  Thanks for posting it!

So that was a bit of proper modeling.  After a few days and more than a few rounds of CA-zip kicker-sand-do it over I have the wings attached and reasonably faired in.

As you can see, the starboard wing root required a little bit of shimming with plastic card.  Everything else was doable just using CA glue as filler.  Smoothing the wing roots was aided by wrapping some self-adhesive sandpaper around a length of brass rod.

I've re-scribed all of the panel lines that were wrecked by sanding.  There are also rivets to re-do, and I KNOW I have a wheel riveter around here somewhere, but I have not used it since before we moved house, and as yet I have not been able to lay a hand on it.  So that will need to wait a bit.  For now, I'm tired of filling and sanding and am heading back over to VTOL to work on my Apache for a while.

Next time around for this project I am going to tackle the undercarriage.  I want to be able to install it at the end of the build, after everything is painted, so I will need to work up some metal pins to secure it with.

Thanks Andrey!  Those are very helpful.  In addition to the hoses on the fuel tank, the picture of the crashed plane clearly shows the control horns and rods (cables?) on the underside of those big ailerons.  Those are not represented in the kit at all, so I'm going to need to think about how to make them.

This time around on the Dewoitine I am going to focus on the undercarriage.  before getting to grips with it I needed to attach the radiator housing.  And that, in turn, needed to have its insides painted before going on.  It actually fits pretty well, and given the general riveted sheet metal look shown in the photos above, I'm going to leave the seams as they are without any further filler.

I painted the insides aluminum, then went over the radiator cores with some light brassy color and then a black wash.  No idea if this is accurate, color-wise, but it makes them stand out a bit.

The undercarriage parts are pretty simple (I've already glued up and sanded the wheels).

The short vertical member actually has a pin molded in that fits snugly into the wing...

But everything else is a really small butt-join, as here on the spat where there's just this little ridge that suggests the placement of the end of the diagonal member...

pnBfCkLLj

So those diagonal pieces are going to require wire pins on all three connection points.

Dry fitting the wheel into the spat it's clear that some of the rim (not just tire) will be visible, so I'll need to make some round masks to paint them with.  If I'm going to do that I might as well sit down and make the Silhouette file for all of the paint masks I'll need later.

Overall I'm reconsidering the idea that I want to build and paint these undercarriage assemblies separate from the rest of the model.  It may be better to get it all assembled now while I have the option of sanding to clean up excess glue etc.  Feels like I'll be able to make it stronger that way, versus trying to attach already-painted parts with just e.g. white glue.

Looking over the photos that Andrey posted, plus some others on the web, a few things are obvious.  1. There are also control horns/wires for the rudder.  The Dora Wings kit actually has the little reinforced squares where the wires emerge from the fuselage molded in, so location is clear.  2. There are control horns ONLY on the underside of the ailerons - so these must be rod-actuated so they can push/pull.  The reinforced locations where the rods emerge are shown on the kit.  3. There are no control horns on the elevators - these much be actuated from inside the fuselage.  4.  Many/most photos show a two-ring gunsight on top of the engine "hood".  I'm surprised that Dora Wings didn't include this in the PE fret that comes with the model.  I have found one that looks about right, in 1/32 scale, from Gas Patch models.  So a bit of scratch building to do here.

Added pins to the landing gear diagonal struts.

With those plus some light trimming to make the ends fit into the little recesses molded into the fuselage, they will sit in place even without glue:

And should be vastly stronger once glued in place than without the pins.

One mistake I made early on was, whilst snipping off the dozens of sprue gates on the fuselage halves, I inadvertently cut off the little nubs that were supposed to join up to make the mounting points for the rudder.  So I had to re-make those:

I've also made and drilled passages in all of the little angled housings from with the aileron and rudder control rods will emerge, and made some simple connection bosses for the fuel hoses that you see in photos of the undersides of the plane.  One thing I still need to decide is whether I need to make reinforcing pins for the little support struts that go under the horizontal stabs (you can see the attachment points above) or whether they are OK as is.  Probably OK, since they won't be weight-bearing.

Enjoying how this one is going Alex. Really nice progress, should come out looking great

Thank you gentlemen!  It’s a nice little kit; just enough DIY required to really feel like you are modeling.  I’m looking forward to painting it, which does not feel that far away.  I have not done a full NMF bird in some while…

Starting to look like an airplane...

I think I'm going to go back and work on my helicopter model for a while now.  Next time I visit this one I'll plan to get the final bits and bobs attached and get a coat of primer on it.
