Finally getting there, this past week I’ve got the upper wing glued on. Because of my inexperience in gluing all the struts on at the same time getting the upper wing on was a three day festival of fun.  Today though a major hurdle was crossed. The rigging is done using the AIMs Gladiator photo etch set in silver, a near must have for me.  It wasn’t difficult to use, but made more difficult by all my mistakes I’ve made along the road to getting here.  And O’boy were there a ton of them.  The more I installed the more difficult it was not to break one off.  I’ll let things settle for a few then touch up all the areas where I’ve glued.  Next stop all the small fiddly bits to glue on, looking good to finish on time again … fingers still crossed ….

Excellent result Dugy, well done! I’m particularly impressed that you’ve managed to get the “X” rigging wire ends entering the shallow “boots” at the base and top of the struts, a detail often missed.

Thanks Max, I have to be honest, if I did something right it wasn’t because I knew what I was doing. More me being lucky, though I did know about that.   You’re right though, and AIMs have got it correct in their length of metal wires. Their etch set was more than worth it, Iain’s idea is genius about the cuts, the flat wires will fit perfectly his way. With my  inexperience it never came close to occurring to me to do what he did.

Looking good.  Your rigging is excellent.

Thanks matey, that AIMs photo etch wire set was the bees knees ….. totally awesome to use. I would highly recommend its use when building this model.  Just need to be anal with your hole drilling and angles.

After having an epic day of rigging another hurdle has been cleared, a much easier one also. I’ve glued on the engine assembly. I need to research the exhaust pipes, seems to me I’ve seen somewhere they were attached or clamped to the lower fuselage with some sort of bracket, but then again at this stage I’m not sure my care factor is turned on high enough….…🤔

I might just order a set of the AIMS wires because my original elastic stuff for some reason has perished so the model is “de-rigged” at the moment! From your recent experience how feasible is it to fit the wires to a fully assembled model Dugy?

I'm glad you said that, as I have both in my stash.  This will probably encourage me to get it out of the stash. :D  I've enjoyed following the progress of the Gladiator builds in this GB.

Cheers,

Michael

Mate, As a complete novice I finished the rigging in a day, I was expecting it to be more difficult.  Now where I messed up and had to enlarge a few holes was with the angle of the holes, and then the direction of them also.  I think depending on how you want to mount them would be a factor too. Say, in the hole or simply on top. Example; if a piece was too long one could simply trim it to fit. AIMs stated that their wires are to fit the exact places on the real aircraft, hence why I did my best to drill holes where they were supposed to go.  Another positive I found out was the size and colour. In the beginning I was worried they’d look too chunky, bulky. But afterwards they’ve nearly disappeared, I also don’t mind the shiny colour, it hi lights some from different angles while minimising others. They certainly look the part. My initial plan was to use small rod, I’d found a supplier in the UK but in the end I purchased the metal set, so glad I did. Hope this helps….

Ok Silver Jubilee, I’m done here. I’m so glad I was able to participate and contribute with all you guys.   Here’s my version of a Norge Gladiator, it’s been a fun, challenging, interesting and sometimes frustrating build.  I’ve managed to conquer a few fears along the way all the while learning a ton too about biplanes.  Heaps thanks for everyone’s help along the way. Here’s a few pics of her …

Absolutely sublime Dugy! You have really captured the appearance of the Norwegian Gladiators with their worn slightly unkempt look! Bravo…marvellous!

Thank mate, I’ve a ton of respect for you guys who build these all the time. When and what ever I build I only want to try and capture the real aircraft as close to possible and to pay the ultimate tribute and respect to the men who flew, fought and sacrificed their lives for us.  So that 50-100 years later I’ve the freedom to build a model in peace, in the comfort of my warm home.
