Fascinating stuff Max, the engine wear sounds horendous, it just shows that the filters were needed, unless the engine wear was considered to be acceptable for the gain in performance.

Its definately getting to the good bits if you are making camouflage masks, they certainly save a lot of time with no paper cutting and Blu Tac Sausages.

I just had to follow up the story of the Mortain operation so I looked it up, a pretty desperate situation for the Americans fighting against a determined German counter attack and airpower holding back the Germans in the nick of time. Very fierce stuff.

Cheers

Dennis

The Mortain encounter was described as a battle Dennis, because the Germans were trying to advance and break through the Allied lines. What came shortly afterwards at the Falaise Gap was described as a massacre because the German army was retreating, surrounded on all sides and unable to get across the Seine. Pigs in a barrel I believe is the expression, necessary but distasteful.

Yes, it was complete carnage, and apparently pilot's could smell the stench of death and decay as they approached it.  As you say, necessary but distasteful, and I think also a testament to the folly of extremist ideology.

Cheers,

Michael

Prior to airfields being established in Normandy, several Typhoon squadrons operated from an airfield in the New Forest, just south of Burley, called Holmsley South.  Daily ops were flown across the Channel, only a half hour flip, but the questionable reliability of the Sabre engine caused a few fears over "La Manche".

A few pics of 175 and 245 Squadrons whilst at Holmsley:

And not to be outdone....175 Squadron....

W/Cdr Green, 121 Wing Officer Commanding, was revered and always led by example:

Squadron Leader "Jack" Collins was the inspirational leader of 245 Squadron:

He was killed when baling out, his parachute snagged on the tailplane and he went down with his plane.

It's all a learning curve Dennis!  This time last year I spent a week cycling in the New Forest and two of our friends stayed at a camp site just south of Burley, they mentioned it was an old airfield.  Guess what.....Holmsley South....and I didn't know.  We're only an hour away so before too long I will be "on a mission" to visit it.

Looking great Max!

I hope you can finish by the 6th!

Wouldn’t it be a strange coincidence to be applying D-Day stripes the night before, just like what happened 80 years ago?

Something I remember seeing but can’t find pictures of now, is the fact the stripes were applied with the gear down, so they didn’t match the wing stripes when in flight.

Thanks chaps, I'm really enjoying the build....lots of (small) challenges on the way but it really has come together well.  However Alain, not a cat in hell's chance of finishing by the 6th, I agree it would be nice but it ain't gonna happen!  The painting of u/c doors makes sense, I was a little surprised that there was no mention of the stripes appearing overnight in “Day of the Typhoon”.

Things moved on surprisingly quickly and smoothly yesterday evening, a couple of tiny touch ups to do but she’s coming on well:

I’m hoping to get the yellow leading edges on the outboard wings done today plus fuselage roundels and fin flashes. The underside mottling plus MSG should be straightforward but then I have to tackle the Squadron vac canopy  and the mask for it. Neither simple ops.
