3D Printed McDonnell RF-101A/C Voodoo WIP

Hi RCPlym,

 

I have seen the amazing results with your clear resin printing so I know it's possible, but I don't have a resin printing setup currently.  When the CAD is done, perhaps I'll get help with parts printed in resin.  For now, I am enjoying printing with HIPS with minimum post processing after printing, and using the same modeling techniques and materials (Tamiya cement, etc.) as regular injection molded plastic, avoiding super glue as much as possible.  A majority of the time on this project I have spent on researching (aviation archeology), for variants and dimension/shape accuracy.  That's probably a lot of word to say "somebody's gotta hold up the lower end of the tech spectrum".  🙂

If only there were a HIPS for SLA printing!

 

If you have the CAD I'd be happy to run you of a few transparencies - in print and clear resin (I can do that reliably).

I am still working to find the best materials and processes for printing. Figuring out antialising, grey pixels, image blur levels and parts orientation etc. is a black art for this stuff and prints take a long time with layers as low as 0.01mm. So far, the Formlabs Form V5 resin @ £98 (ouch!!!😬) per kilo is the best and Inslogic High Clear @ £30 kilo is a pretty close second.

Getting rid of the 'ice blue' reaction to the UV in sunlight, pretty as it is, is proving the stumbling block to me saying "I have nailed it!"

I think you have perfectly summed up why I have not dipped into the liquid resin side yet.  Dark art indeed.  And yes once I have better transparency models, it would be great to see some printed with your process.  Thank you for the kind offer.

Since the last posting, I updated the panel lines to the F-101A/C and improved the gun covers.  The rest of the work would be applicable to both the F-101A/C and RF-101A/C.

 

The cockpit area behind the seat received some attention, as well as a new canopy frame and buck for the clear part (which will need some adjustment to the draft angle).  The actuator parts are in progress.

 

A little mock-up of the canopy in the opened position.  I prefer the look of the closed canopy, but would like it to be poseable.

Just a small update with work in progress instrument panel coamings, two versions for the RF (early RF-101A/C, late RF-101C), and one for the F-101C with MA-7 gun sight.

 

 

Lots of research went into the canopy assembly that covers the actuator mechanisms as well as the canopy pivoting hinges, not much of which is visible in the closed pose.  The actuator mechanism is rather complicated, and is in a pretty tight space.  Looks like adjustment is also needed to resolve clearance issues with the ejection seat rails.

Coming on nicely, can't wait to get my hands on one. Like you I have been through a busy period so haven't been able to get the M39 where I want it.

Been talking to a specialist, so possible it will be going for a proper looking at.
