1/700 USS Nimitz and USS Pharris

Some folks may remember that a while back I asked about ship forums. I was looking at building a 1/700 USS Nimitz. That has expanded to including a 1/700 USS Pharris too. You may also remember that this is for a friend who is a retired Navy Chief. I've found information about a particular cruise that he has mentioned which lists the air squadrons, so I can make up a proper air wing.

I couldn't find information about what ships were the escorts during that cruise. And while I can't find any information that USS Pharris ever escorted USS Nimitz, I'm using some modeler's license to use USS Pharris as the Plane Guard. He had also served aboard USS Pharris.

So:

As you can see, I'm going to try to drive myself totally insane with all the PE. :mental:

I'm also going to create a diorama (15" x 42") and I've started on that. It needs some trim for the side which I plan on staining. I'm also thinking about looking into a polycarbonate cover too.

The first thing to point out is that I've never done water, so it should be interesting.

Also good, I still get to model airplanes. :yahoo:

I was thinking. I was at Omaha last year and at lunch time one day, I got something to eat and just used a stand-up table that was available next to the food stand. There was another fellow there and we got to talking. He's a ship modeler. I talked about this project and doing it in 1/700, in the end, I asked him if he had any suggestions for someone who was an aircraft modeler taking on this kind of ship model project. His reply was "I don't do 1/700". :lol::lol:

Good luck, great project!

For water, especially it this scale, try this stuff. You can find it at Michael's or Hobby Lobby or art supply stores.

I've used it on several scenes, and its really effective it the smaller scales.

Thanks!  I've got a lot to work out 'til then but suggestions are always welcome.
