Greif8
Below is the Meng Fokker Dr.I that I completed today. The majority of my aircraft builds focus on a minor ace or unknown pilot or the ground crew. This build is a major exception to that as the Meng kit came with a 1/10 scale bust of Manfred von Richthofen and I have had a Model Cellar 1/32 figure of the baron for quite some time now; so I decided to build his iconic all red Fokker Dr.I 425/17, the aircraft he flew his final sortie in on 21 April 1918. I used Aviattic fabric decals but oversprayed them with a red color that I mixed. Other aftermarket items I used on this build include Gaspatch Spandau machineguns, 1/48 turnbuckles and eyelets. I also used a HGW seatbelt. This was mostly a fun build, the Meng kit goes together well, and the finished model will make a nice addition to the other WWI aircraft that I have previously built. On to the photos. First up, some general shots. The baron and his Fokker. Some mid-range shots. A few macros. And my attempt to combine the bust and the Dr.I. tucohoward, Madmax, red Dog and 19 others 19

I used the same techniques that I use for 1/32 and 1/35 scale figures and it worked out pretty well. Ernest

Your figure painting is special. Thanks for sharing Rod Thank you for the kind words guys! Mike I am pretty satisfied with the final color and tone(s) of the red. This is one of those builds where the whole really is greater than the parts. After painting the sub-assembilies I had my doubts about the color, but the finished product looks pretty good. Rod, my wife says I have an artistic streak in me and figure painting lets that come out. I don't know about the artistic part, but I do enjoy painting figures quite a bit. I have already been hitting the streets on my road bike as the cycling season begins and my time at the bench is starting to drop. Sillymodeler, I hope you enjoy the process when you get around to building your version of the baron's all red Fokker. Which one do you think you will do? sillymodeler
@Greif8 Like you, I plan to build the plane that Baron rode in his last battle. That will be a part of three pairs of planes I am personally building as “the Last Battle series.” Last year I built the Albatros D.II (Richthohen) & Airco DH2 (Lanoe Hawker). This year, Fokker F.I (Werner Voss) & SE5a (James McCudden) Next year Fokker Dr.I (Richthohen) & Sopwith Camel (Arthur Roy Brown) Bron's red aircraft should be the final piece in this series. Just for your information: You can mention me like @sillymodeler, so that I can receive notification of your mention. jeroen_R90S
That looks gorgeous -that red really looks great. Although I was unable to comment much on the build thread (lots of reasons ) I did enjoy reading it while travelling to work by train. It's hard to turm this scheme into something unique, but you really captured it -the figure and bust look good, too Jeroen Greif8

Jeroen, getting the red the way I wanted it took some work and I had some failures before I managed to get a decent result. Who would have thought getting a red tone correct would be so hard! The challenge was getting the metal and wooden areas to look slightly different than the fabric areas. My first couple of efforts with that were ugly in their starkness. I ended up with a fair amount of left over red that I mixed. I guess I'll use it on another of the baron's planes, not all red this time, in a future build. Thank you for following along and, again, for you kind words. Ernest jeroen_R90S
