Stokey Pete
As I wrap up my F-15 build in the ‘Turning Japanese’ GB, I’ve decided to get in on this one too. The GB’s are providing me with incentive and mojo to get things built and completed. With the theme in mind, I have chosen the following to put into the mix. It’ll be a purely OOB build, apart from the markings which I will use paint masks for where possible. There’s no frills intended, it’ll be buttoned up tight, no details on display, and as per my MO….it’ll be wheels up and posed in flight. If I can source a pilot figure before I sew up the cockpit build….happy days, but if not, I won’t be losing any sleep. Stokey Pete
Now that I’ve wrapped up the F-15DJ fully, I can switch my attentions to this one. Just snipping a few parts and getting a feel for the plastic. I love this kit, it’s appears great value for money, and I’m impressed with Airfix use of recyclable plastic. I do get concerned about waste from my kits. Stokey Pete
Not much to show for many hours work, but I’ve got the wing section all buttoned up. There was little point in painting anything inside of it, apart from the wheel bays, and even they will largely disappear once I retract the undercarriage into them. The ribs either side of the guns were painted just in case they could be seen through the shell ejector ports…..but they’re invisible. I left the inboard edges of the wings unglued from the ribs and spars, allowing me a little ‘wiggle room’ when it comes to mating them with the fuselage, to leave no steps. denders, Landrotten Highlander, geedubelyer and 6 others
quang
Very good progress, Pete. Just a quick advice in passing. In the case of such a large model, I’d avoid at all cost ‘wiggling’ to get things adjusted. On the contrary, I’d try to make the mating components as rigid as possible. From my experience, it’s critical to carefully glue ALL the ribs and spars provided even if they’re invisible in the final. They’ll add to the much needed rigidity of the large wings and assure a strong and sturdy wing/fuselage joint. Dry fitting has shown me a step at the wing root that I’ll have to take care of. geedubelyer

Many builders, myself included, have noticed THAT step. Not much you can do except carefully scrape off the excess with a round-tipped blade. geedubelyer
geedubelyer
Speedy progress Pete. Thanks to you and quang for the heads-up regarding the wing root step. Stokey Pete
Stokey Pete
The accelerator is pressed and this build starts to gather momentum towards the paint shop. Engine cowlings, radiators and control surfaces to construct next. In between those tasks……the bomb bay to my Lancaster. Zola25
How did I miss this one? - Its really looking to be a nice model. I also bought it when it came out and its going to be my first 1/24 too - I was considering either building this or the Border Lancaster next - sound familiar - seems like you just went all in Respect! /Niels Stokey Pete

Stokey Pete
I’m a couple of parts, and a filling and sanding session away from putting some paint onto this. If id had the time again, I’d have built it in a totally different order to the instructions to better some of the joints. The engine cowlings in particular, are a bind to position satisfactorily. I don’t know if it’s shrunk parts, or misalignment on my part, but I’m left with a couple of gaps that are gonna need a blob or two of filler. That been said, it’s the finest fitting Airfix kits I’ve ever built, and I’ll really look forward to building an open one with all the good stuff on show. denders, BradG, Landrotten Highlander and 5 others

Looking forward to seeing her in paint. Cheers, Guy Thanks Guy. I put the speedy progress down to my not building or painting any of the stuff I can’t see, like the entire engine, the gun parts. Likewise, I haven’t really spent any time weathering the interior as the canopy will be on. Add to that, I’ll be displaying this on a wall Mount when it’s done. It’s all added up to leaving half the kit in the box, and it kinda falling together. Progress will be halted after base paint, as I’ve just seen that 1ManArmy are to release a set of their data stencilling masks. I get to paint all markings onto it now. Happy days. geedubelyer and MikeMaben
