Isar 30/07 Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 Hi Oliver, my thoughts on your questions: 1) Have a look here: When you scroll down you find tips from @Rick K which worked perfectly. 2) Anti-static strip? If you´re talking about the orange "frame" around the center panel in windshield, I´d do this using a yellow/orange masking tape, i.e. from Tamiya. I once bought a tape, used mainly by car paint shops, which hasn´t the "thickness" of the the Tamiya tape. This works for me since years and I wouldn´t use any other. But Tamiya tape should work as well here. Cutting thin strips and this should represent both - colour and thickness. 3) Dot pattern. I´d give it a try using some (silver) rivets offered by HGW i.e. Preparing the canopy using Future first. Cutting rivet strips in the desired length using a new scalpell to remove as much of the clear film as possible. Place them onto the inside of the canopy. When dried, then do another coat of Future. I´d see how or if it works using a spare canopy/clear part first. Fantastic work so far! Curious how you do these challenges... Cheers Reimund red Dog 1
A-10LOADER Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 1. The two front side panels definitely have a yellow tint to them. 2. As for the static strip, I would just paint in on. 3. For the dot pattern maybe try some Archer rivets added to some clear decal paper followed by a gloss coat to seal them in place ?? I've never tried to apply decals to a clear part so don't know if this would work or not, that's a tough one. Steve red Dog 1
red Dog Posted July 11, 2023 Author Posted July 11, 2023 (edited) Thank you Reimund and Steve, your help is greatly appreciated. Regarding the dot pattern, I have lately seen a lot of hogs without them. It seems though that there is a wire running alongside the anti-static strip and ends up with a tiny sensor just above the pilot's head. It seems much simplier to implement but I really don't know which is the old one and which is the newest one. Here's the dot pattern: and here's the wire thingy We can see though that on the dot pattern, the attachment points of the wires are still there although the wire is missing. That may lead to believe that the single sensor with the wire was actually replaced with the dot pattern or it may also means that the sensor does not need to be powered anymore. Either way I don't know Another interesting picture about the helmet which might be useful at some point. For instance when scratching the eye display module here's another one with the tracker source and the wire going indeed to the power supply: that's the wire we can see running on the canopy from the back: Edited July 11, 2023 by red Dog Marcel111, A-10LOADER, Isar 30/07 and 1 other 4
A-10LOADER Posted July 12, 2023 Posted July 12, 2023 The dots are the latest upgrade. Steve red Dog 1
Pete Fleischmann Posted July 13, 2023 Posted July 13, 2023 I think if I were going to replicate the constellation of helmet trackers (dots)- I’d create a template of the dot pattern, temporarily tape it to the outside of the canopy, and from the inside, tap a tiny dot of JB WELD (applied with a fine strip of wire held in a pin vice) at the dot locations. I do rivets like this all the time. JB WELD dries to a very dark grey. It domes beautifully; and after you practice for a bit, you’ll make consistent sized dots. No decal film to deal with either P red Dog, Dany Boy, JayW and 5 others 7 1
JayW Posted July 13, 2023 Posted July 13, 2023 Hey - ignoramus here. Can anyone explain how those dots work? And what is their purpose?
red Dog Posted July 14, 2023 Author Posted July 14, 2023 (edited) That should answer it it's basically the same stuff flight sim fans use with the Track IR Edited July 14, 2023 by red Dog A-10LOADER, CODY, Martinnfb and 4 others 3 4

red Dog Posted July 16, 2023 Author Posted July 16, 2023 A few bits need to be added in the cockpit: Both canopy frame instruments provided by Cutting Edge have been detailled with the missing indexers and aoa indicator. I also made them bulkier and added shaped support for the canopy frame attachment. The resin box on the right is the embryo of the specific A-10C DTU unit that comes behind the seat. It is a very proeminent feature that replaced the thermos holder The resin box was further shaped and detailled. I had to compromise the width due to my canopy side framing probably being a little bit too wide. More details & rivets and the DTU installed where it belongs. Next: more work on the seat and basic painting of the pilot Yes I delay the impossible task of painting the insides of the canopy and windscreen Landrotten Highlander, A-10LOADER, easixpedro and 7 others 10
red Dog Posted July 16, 2023 Author Posted July 16, 2023 (edited) I lightened the flight suit and continued painting the pilot: Cutting edge provides the canopy breaker in resin but these need to be bent outward which is not possible to do. I replaced them with aluminium foil, bent to shape The seat pitot tubes are also provided by Cutting edge. I will add the Oxygen mask and charts and printed kneeboards on the pilot's legs. The guy will receive a gloss coat and some decals and dark light washes before a flat coat - before he gets glued in. Flight stick will also be added in his right hand and I will redo the harness belts attaching him to the seat Not glued, but here's the A-10C IP Can't avoid it now, I'll have to paint the insides of the transparencies Wish me luck Edited July 16, 2023 by red Dog MikeMaben, easixpedro, Isar 30/07 and 12 others 15
themongoose Posted July 16, 2023 Posted July 16, 2023 Good luck! i love the pose for your pilot, different and brings the scene to life. A-10LOADER, red Dog and Pete Fleischmann 2 1
phasephantomphixer Posted July 16, 2023 Posted July 16, 2023 The dark yellow (used to be burnt red) surround on the windscreen is defrost heating strip embedded in the glass. red Dog 1
