Model Ship building forums?

I'm contemplating building a model of Nimitz for a friend who served on her '86-'91.

1. Anyone know of a friendly ship building forum?

2. There are a couple of ship models that appear to be of Nimitz in '75. At least that's what the box leads me to believe. I'm going to be looking for any noticeable changes made between '75 and the '86-'91 range. I'm sure my friend will notice.

Thanks.

Model Warships is a pretty neat site. Lots and lots of ship stuff.

It’s a great site for information and looking at other’s detailed builds. Lots of lurkers and occasionally i would get some advice. I don’t think it compares to LSP. My Enterprise is on there, same moniker i use here if you want to look at some build info. Check out their research pages as they are absolutely the best. 60+ pages on the big carriers!

edit-i would add that I didn’t find much else out there for warships and I’ve built quite a few. Stay away from steel navy, his site is trolled by porn sites last couple times i was there and they tag onto his links and redirect you.

Here's a website that should prove useful: Search, download and print NARA & DVIDS Public Domain Archive images, albums, collections (getarchive.net)

It's essentially a search engine for all of the National Archives, plus DVIDs (Defense Visual Information Center--all the PA photos).  You can adjust the dates etc and get some good period shots. Even better, they'll tell you where they're from so you can go to the source (also public domain, so free use).

Most of the photos on DoD pages such as www.navy.mil don't go back that many years. This is a way to find the 'older' stuff.

The most comparable I’ve found is Model Ship World: https://modelshipworld.com/ I’ve learned an enormous amount following the builds and tips there, it’s very friendly and supportive, and when I’ve posted my builds there I’ve been gratified by the encouragement.

Cheers,  Tom
