kkarlsen
I'm having some issues with the Long Range Fuel Tanks of the Spitfire... I'm not sure witch Spitfire Mk the drawing here refers to? I'm guessing around Mk.XVIe'ish since these parts are from the Tamiya Mk.XVIe kit. So what did the Spitfire IX Long Range Fuel Tanks look like? Another drawing of a different Long Range Fuel Tank possibly a Mk. IX? The only photo I could find of a Mk IX with Long Range Fuel Tanks... I hope that someone can shed a little light on this subject? Maybe a photo of the Mk IX tanks uninstalled? P.S. (where is the oxygen tank) Cheers: Kent Edited July 18, 2022 by kkarlsen
kkarlsen
I have had contact with Spitfire.com at Goodwood Aerodrome close to Chichester. They provided me with this photo of the Long range fuel tank of their 'Silver Spitfire' renovation project. It's a modernized version of the first drawing of the tanks, close the one from the Tamiya kit. Cheers: Kent
Kagemusha
The initial drawing is of a Seafire, don't think Spitfire's were ever fitted with that type of drop tank. Martinnfb

I think your right Andy, I've only ever seen pics of the slipper tank on Spitfires. MikeC
Pete Roberts
The diagram you have posted Kent is of a Seafire long range tank. Slipper tanks were used on Mk IXs and another type of long range tank used was as per this example (this an Eduard Brassin set): Edited June 30, 2022 by Pete Roberts
Kagemusha
Yep it's definitely a Seafire XV, which came in both high back and bubble top, in fact you can see it referred to in the drawing top right - 41 Gall standard fuselage, 33 Gall rear view fuselage - you can also see the outlines of both canopy types, no doubt the reason for the fuel tanks being long range. MikeC
The drawing (from AP 1565, which is basically the "bible" for the Merlin-engined Spits) seems to be a hybrid covering a number of marks. Note how the annotation in the top right refers to two different sizes of LR tank, one for use with the standard fuselage, one with the rear-view fuselage. That drop tank is one I've only seen on Griffon Seafires. CANicoll
