themongoose
Rockie I sure wish I’d have kept alot of my childhood builds…but then i remember why they went as I actually played with them, or had them fall from the ceiling when the tape peeled off haha! Great memories blackbetty, speaking of great memories what a cool build. You really took it back to the basics there! I read the whole thing. A really cool build you did there. Maru thx for the props buddy, glad to see you making the rounds!
themongoose
I am totally lost, how did I build this model as a kid? I know I built at least one and I’m pretty sure too. This is kicking my butt for sure! I’m winning though one little battle at a time. My hope was to get the fuselage all assembled with the wings this weekend. Unfortunately that’s not gonna happen but you just can’t rush this thing. I’ve got a bottle of plast-i-weld and I’ve never used that on a whole model before, well here is the first. Check out all the plastic sheeting that I’ve added for support to hold things together because there’s so much stress on it. I’m not sure there is a piece on this that is NOT warped. Jason you were a hell of a man putting these things together straight out of the box. My hats off to you and I am determined to make this a great model just for you Looks a bit of a mess but believe me it’ll be perfect when i put the final primer on it. It’s crazy smooth now but this shows what it takes to get it there after going back and forth to figure out whether to start lining things up from front or back based on which direction made it easier to remove the crazy warps i decided on the front 1st. Now, right up to this point i had working, folding wing tips. But after the 7th or 8th time flipping it upside down and right-side off they broke off. 2-3hrs work lost. Gonna have to glue them on now yeah, those clamps weren’t big enough had to break out the whole toolbox The side of the fuselage was off by a full 1/16”+. In the middle of the below photo you can see the white plastruct sheet i added as a retaining tab. The green fuselage edge has to go OVER that to line up with the upper fuselage half hahaha in between time while waiting for the plasti weld to dry I’ve been working on miscellaneous parts. The big accomplishment today was pilots and this is where she is as of tonight. I glued in more tabs to hold the port fuselage together but have to wait till tomorrow to join the top and bottom or it’ll just pull apart incentive, incentive, incentive…this is gonna be purty when i’m done. Never would have come across this one I bet if Jason hadn’t pointed it out. Was looking for Turkish pilot pics and guess what shows up, never seen in a search for the A/C Let’s close out this huge update with an original layout that I did for Jason. Definite motivation. Getting real close to paint… side note-that’s my Tamiya Phantom in the pic. I sed it to do the 1st draft before Jason sent me half the Revell kit to finish it up :-) Edited July 11, 2022 by themongoose LSP_Kevin, scvrobeson, Model_Monkey and 4 others
themongoose
After a slow day of watching cement dry we have progress. And good progress at that. A big clamp and some plasticard and more cement went into this maybe, just maybe, i will be ready for NATS next week. Not going to rush it tho. themongoose
Cleaning up joints and doing sanding tonight. In between I’ve started preparing the paint scheme. The jet looks really flat and dull in the pics so take a look at this and tell me what you think… satin primer Dark German grey mottled Grimy black mottled over German gray Tamiya rubber black misted over it - 2 angles to see the weathering show a bit in pics Dead flat clear, 2 angles to see the weathering show a bit in pics reference pic for comparison GreyGhost, Landrotten Highlander, Alex and 5 others

Trying to keep the momentum going. NATS is close. Was hoping to be in primer tonight but my sister visited and my daughter wanted to go to the antique mall, and hey life comes at you fast! Os i am down to the last rounds of fine sanding and filling to get the contours right. Just for my own motivation let’s go thru what it looks like Nose it nearly there. Only an odd spot around the bottom to do Found these after the fact of course. HOW! Did i not catch this before assembling the wings? Need to use a finer sandpaper and they will go away Need a 4th round here. This area of all things was a mess. I guess due to the number of poeces all coming together in this area around the nose gear. The amount of flash and just plain weird plastic flow created all sorts of things to sand lol check out that glob around the bottom section of the tail… Spines in good shape And remember that big warp and the giant gap at the back, well here it is. A little fine sanding and this will be invisible even in black. That’s the big kicker on this one - the jet is pretty much done in black! GreyGhost
That s looking great Chris... Just a heads up, it appears that that Phantom didn't have the RHAW antenna blister on the trailing edge of the vertical tail tip ... -Gregg themongoose

Since I’m building this by the Basic Kit Build IPMS rules i have to interpret what i can and can’t do based on the general rules they wrote. I tried getting feedback on the ipms site but they basically just say it’s up to the judge on site to make final call. SO, in the end I think taking that big antenna off might constitute a major surgery and have decided to leave it on. The rules are clear on this point, the restrictions on major changes may result in a model that isn’t accurate however the intent is to build what you got in the kit and show what you can do from that starting point. im close to putting the raised panel lines back on. Might be primered by dinner now…you’ve probably noted how this time keeps slipping lol Bourbon tasting with my wife tonight so a hard stop at 430 today
GreyGhost
Ah, completely understandable Chris ... I know some folks are sticklers about the details and I noticed in the photo you most recently posted above of the real jet, that the antenna wasn't present ... themongoose
Moving right along today. Almost all the small parts are ready to go. Now to just get the aircraft done :-) Satin black primer on the bottom. The Black Hawk is all black on the bottom so this will be the base for the color and weathering. Gotta like simple. I needed some of that Then for the top I had to do something different. After experimenting with the colors for the Hawk the light gray looked totally different over the satin black. It just wasn't going to work. So this is wraith bone, which is an off white that lays down very smooth. Next up I'm using haze grey, the old WWII battleship color, for the light gray on the hawk. Then a break for an hour or so to let that dry while I print the masks. See you on the flip side blackbetty, MikeMaben, Alex and 5 others
themongoose
Long long night! The Black Hawk portion is complete and I have her in a gloss coat! Here's her glamour shot These next 2 are prior to the gloss coat. The only thing I'm not happy with is that alot of the different colors I used for black have gotten lost once I cleared it. I did the bottom in satin and it still lost almost all the variation. Gonna have to work on that. Lots and lots to do. themongoose
Got my model to contest room without tripping over my own 2 feet! I think Jason would like how it turned out. I used everything in the kit, figured why not the wheels roll, the engine, sparrow, and fuselage engine cover all fit annd stay in place like Revell designed it. The wingtips folded and unfolded for a day before the rod broke on both sides so i had to glue those and fill the seem. Pilots are removable, nose cone fits as welland can be placed on the model if wanted. tried my hand with chalks on this one. Engine done with multiple colors. Also for the jet nozzle I used masks, the liquid mask over the stencil i made, painted it up, then wet sanded to create wear, some chalks and away we go once I get home I may take some more detailed shots. No good lighting here as you can tell from the room pics i added some background and Jason’s LSP Profile to the card to share his story.
