The Sunday update is a wee bit special..

You see I forgot to make one update and only recently found it in my camera. I made and update on Patreon following this update...so I will make one
big update with the both updates as one.

The exhausting work continues

The insides of the landing bay doors got a thin dark wash to bring out the details

IMG_6499.JPG

THen it was the tedious masking of the exhausts first with small squares...

IMG_6500.JPG

IMG_6501.JPG

The burners got a wash....

IMG_6502.JPG

Followed by City Dark Dust pigments...

IMG_6503.JPG

IMG_6504.JPG

Then soot streaks with black pigment.

IMG_6505.JPG

IMG_6506.JPG

Then further masking on the turkey feathers....

IMG_6507.JPG

IMG_6508.JPG

And painted them in Alclad steel

IMG_6510.JPG

IMG_6511.JPG

Here is a new thing I decided to test on the exhausts.

As you remember I clear coated the exhausts last in my previous post....Now I painted them with Alclad Stainless Steel and I DID NOT seal the color with a clear coat!

That means that when I put down the wash it partly disolved the Stainless steel coat.

IMG_6512(1).JPG

IMG_6513(1).JPG

You see how the Steel is rubbed off at places and it gives the exhaust the splotchy uneven shines from heat staining. NOW however I seal it with a clear coat.

IMG_6514(1).JPG

Whilte the clear coat dried I painted the outside of the wheelbay doors in MRP Ukrainian Air Force Light Blue...note no preshade on them! The Digi cammo is rather new and I have yet to see a dirty and weathered jet...as a matter of fact it seems theat the Ukrainians keep their jets in better condition than the russians.

An entirely unprofessional observation and I have nothing really to substansiate it on than the pictures I've found online.

IMG_6515(1).JPG

IMG_6516(1).JPG

IMG_6517(1).JPG

Back to the exhausts...

I used Sakura pens with blue and orange to create heatstain discoloration.

IMG_6518(1).JPG

I simply paint a spot...

IMG_6519(1).JPG

And smear it out with my finger...sorry for the bad picture but you get the geist of it.

IMG_6520(1).JPG

Nice effects but they need more shine to blend them in

IMG_6521(1).JPG

I use SnJ's aluminium powder with a cotton swab. I dip one end in the powder and then dot around the exhaust and smear it out or dab it with the other end of the cotton swab.

IMG_6522(1).JPG

LIke so, this also helped with the cracking of the first clear coat layer I noticed here and there.

IMG_6523(1).JPG

At this stage I glued the exhausts together, really nice fit but you do have to align them for a while to get that perfect fit. I can tell you straight out that this model does not need after market exhausts. The details are absurdly fine on these!

IMG_6524.JPG

IMG_6525.JPG

IMG_6526.JPG

IMG_6527.JPG

Now for the last stage....black pigment to give them that sooty feel and uneven finish.

IMG_6528.JPG

IMG_6529.JPG

IMG_6530.JPG

Cheers!

Wow!  Just wow!  This thread is fantastic. Aigore, you have a real talent, and I gotta tell you how envious I am. One of these days I'm going to start my Tamiya F-15E Strike Eagle and as I'm following your progress I'm scribbling down note after note.  You're one heck of a builder and I can't wait for the next episode.

Looks great!

I may have missed it, but because of the break-down, I assume these are the kit exhausts and not aftermarket? If they are, they're all the more impressive!

Thanks jeroen :D

indeed, the only aftermarket in this kit is the Quinta Studio set, masks and decals....eventually... i got the wrong decals rom hannant's and now they are sod out :(

Hi all,

I have more Ukranian fighters going on Patreon.

i am forced to use Patreon to afford my hobby as it is right now. I have been on sickleave for more than a year now and it's hitting me financially.

I'm only charging the minimal monthly fee, equivalent to $1 ..or as much as you feel comfortable with.

So far there are about 2000 pictures in build blogs. galleries and articles. there are patron exclusive content as builds that never are shared in forums.

I am sorry that I'm forced to do this but it's the only way for me to afford my hobby right now and my hobby is very important for my mental health as

I have little else to do with my time as I slowly regain my physial health.

cheers

The Friday update is ready to rollout!

Canopy woes

Finally my paint masks arrived for the canopy....BUT,  yeah you'll see soon.

First I have to point out the special feature of this model.... it comes with two different canopies. One clear part molded in one piece and one with a frame in ordinary gray plastic and the clear parts separate.

IMG_6531.JPG

IMG_6532.JPG

I start wondering if there is some benefit of this.

The clear parts are molded the same way as the one piece canopy, that is with a middle seam...so you don't get rid of that.

IMG_6533.JPG

The pieces fit quite well....

IMG_6534.JPG

BUT when looking closely at the frame where the clear and gray plastic meet it is quite rough. As a modeller I don't really like this but I asume it makes painting the frame easier without masking...but I prefer the old fashion masking method.

IMG_6535.JPG

IMG_6536.JPG

IMG_6537.JPG

IMG_6538.JPG

The fit of the windshield is so so...I think I will have to do something about that.

IMG_6539.JPG

At least I can use the extra canopy as a paint mask when painting the fuselage.

IMG_6540.JPG

Talking about masking, time to mask the inside  of the canopy and wind shield.

No problems with the windshield...

IMG_6541.JPG

When I started masking the canopy I noticed something odd though.....that can't be right.

IMG_6542.JPG

Well of course I had got the canopy masks for the single seater! SIGH!

IMG_6543.JPG

So the rear part I had to mask myself.... I used the corners from the mask set...because I'm lazy.

IMG_6544.JPG

Added thin strips of kabuki tape....

IMG_6545.JPG

And masked...

IMG_6546.JPG

First a black primer...

IMG_6548.JPG

Then I painted the cockpit colour.

IMG_6549.JPG

And off with the mask....

IMG_6550.JPG

IMG_6551.JPG

I will continue on the canopy in the next update.

Cheers!

And here is the Sunday update

Yet more masking.

And time for the outside of the canopy.

First I masked for the frame sealant....

No probs on the windshield...

IMG_6552.JPG

IMG_6553.JPG

And the forward part of the canopy went well...

IMG_6554.JPG

Then it was time for the rear part where I don't have any masks :P well I made my own but still annoying that I ordered the wrong one!

IMG_6555.JPG

The sealant is pink in this case...there are black sealant too on sukhoijs but aparently this had pink acording to refs.

IMG_6556.JPG

and then I masked off the pink...

IMG_6557.JPG

On with gray primer.

IMG_6558.JPG

Then on with some Citadel Nulnoil as a wash.

IMG_6561.JPG

IMG_6562.JPG

IMG_6563.JPG

IMG_6564.JPG

That's all for today :D

Cheers!

Friday is upon us....the Icehockey World Cup is also upon us and me being me means I will be watching lots of hockey which might impact negatively on me builing stuff
Go Team Finland!!!!

but I have an update for you.

Closing the pit...

Hmmm...I need to make the nose cone fit better...thst means a weee bit of putty.

IMG_6607.JPG

Then a bit of drybrushing.

IMG_6608.JPG

IMG_6609.JPG

Next it was time for the HUD, you get to choose between a PE and a plastic HUD the PE always loos best but is a tad tricky.

IMG_6610.JPG

After a bit of wrestling and having small pieces of acetate fly off in to the infinity I finally had  the glass put in and the HUD painted. Interesting that there is a piece of acetate covering the lens.

IMG_6611.JPG

To make life easier I cut of the tab in the windshield

IMG_6612.JPG

And glued it into place.

IMG_6613.JPG

A nasty seam to the nose cone

IMG_6614.JPG

And the canopy got put in place temporarely for the paintjob.

IMG_6615.JPG

Painting draws closer....

Cheers!
