PCM Ta152C revisited

Hi guys,

Here's yesterdays work, masking and painting the natural metal areas under the Ta wings.  Paint is Mission Models Aluminium with  some panels picked out with an Aluminium/Chrome mix. There's a small amount of handling damage that I'll sort out today. Currently about to make a mask set on the Silhouette for the larger markings.

The pretty pink tape is from MT, a decent masking tape from Japan that I get from Amazon here in the UK.  Who cares about the colour?

And after a lot of messing about with paint, airbrushes and some fast masking techniques, here's the metal finish.  It will be improved with panel line washes and some selective dirt and grime.

Now back to cutting the masks for the crosses, might even have a photo or two up this afternoon.

Hi Guys,

Another day at the coal face.  I made the masks, fitted them (always a pain to line up) and added kitchen paper spray shields.  As usual, my preferred paint is Mission Models and I mixed up White and Black to spray thru my Mr. Custom PS-770 airbrush.  Didn't take long, the time is all in the preparation and the subsequent clean up.

First mask located.  It's a start!

Taking off the over spray shields.  The model has taken a fair bit of handling and there's some wear and tear to the wing tip paint, easy enough to touch up tomorrow.

That's the second marking done.

Underwing crosses next.  Here's the first mask in position.

Overspray masks in place and MMP Black applied.

We have a cross!

And from the bottom.

So that's me finished for the day. Touch ups tomorrow and maybe a gloss coat to take the data and servicing decals.

Very nice.

I'm to sure but please check the left wing tip - seems to be not fully painted.

I noted that in a caption on one of the photos. Quite a lot of handling knocks and wear that will be sorted before i add a gloss layer and decals.

Hi Guys,

Some more bits and bobs on the Ta152C.  I decided to break up the blue areas with standard RLM76 rather than the RAF Sky I used to get the late war grunge 76. so I masked up the flaps and applied standard 76 as if they were wood and subcontractor factory painted.

Finished result.  Its not much of a difference but every little helps!

Ailerons also lightened on the top surface, again sub contractor painted.

This morning I cut some more masks on the Silhouette to make the fuselage identity numbers.  Paint is MMP-101 Insignia red over their Pink Primer.

51803336238_e24aac6b79_b.jpg

Abbreviated airframe number on the port fin side only, which seems to have been common practice at the end of the war.

As it is at the moment.  Reading the Japo books it seems like late war FW-190D airframes didn't have much in the way of data and servicing stencils applied, generally the fuel and oil triangles, maybe First Aid cross, power socket and Oxygen but very little else.  So I expect the production Ta152C would be issued in a similar state.

That's it for now.  Hope you like it a bit.

Hi Guys.

I wanted some chipped bits around access panels like gun covers, filler points, etc and used a PrismaColor Metallic Silver pencil.

Might need more, might need less.  Not sure yet.

The PCM instructions and sprue drawing say there are clear wing tip nav lights but none of my three kits seems to have them.  PCM owners gave up the business and retired so there's no way I'm going to ever get them, so back to scratch building.  Rounded the end of a piece of 1mm plastic rod, drilled the wing tip and here's the result.  Still need to add a drop pf paint.

Hi Guys,

Pressed the wrong button so here's part two of the last post.

I finally worked out where the undercarriage down lock indicators should be and drilled the first hole.  And like a complete twit, got it in the wrong place.  So here's the new hole with the poorly placed one filled with a bit of thin plastic rod and sanded smooth.  Clean up destroyed the paint finish, so remedials required!

51806301765_be4591ec1b_b.jpg

Some Grey Primer applied then a bit of MMP RLM82.

51805993048_a9282a0242_b.jpg

And the rest of the cammo is RLM81, MMP again.  I'll add the tiny indicator rods at the last moment, even after rigging the aerial wires.

51805881391_f0d4001422_b.jpg

And that's today's modelling done.  Not actually very much but there was a considerable amount of fretting, swearing and cursing after i got that hole in the wrong place!

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi Guys,

Very slow progress with the 1/32 PCM Ta152C.  i had trouble with the gunsight, it fell out.  Picked it up, dusted it off, put it back in.  Then it dropped into the cockpit, rolled off the front of the floor into the fuselage, rattled for a bit then went quiet - obviously the supper glue on it found a home and stopped there.  So I added a QuickBoost Revi16B, cut in half laterally, then mounted on a shelf of plasticard.  It was a complete nightmare.  Still haven't put the reflex glass in place, that'll be a lot later.  And I've built and painted some undercarriage bits but again, a complete dog to get to fit.

It's reasonable but no prize winner.

The PCM guns are just like the Hasagawa Fw190D-9 ones, crude and dire! These are QuickBoost for the late A series from Hasegawa.

51825886736_c34e0a2294_b.jpg

The RLM02 part of the gun is actually and external sleeve to protect the barrel from debris thrown up from the ground.

The Pitot is made from Albion Alloys telescoping Brass Tube.

Undercarriage bit with some paint on them.

51827026064_fbc832463c_b.jpg

Lead wire for the flexible brake hoses.  Why two?  The Ta had brakes on the inside and outside of each wheel rim, so a second flexi thru the hollow axle to the outer brake.  the outer wheel centre does not turn.

51824937497_562b63cd78_b.jpg

Barracuda's resin wheels with added lead wire flexible hoses.  These are stunningly mastered and cast.

I haven't done much at all, oh well.

Hi Guys,

A lot of progress on the Ta152C, in fact so much it is FINISHED!  but lots of problems on the way.  I mean, what else did you expect?

After a lot of pushing and shoving, swearing and general buggering about, I actually got the undercarriage in roughly the right place.

51830459134_cc6a70f07d_b.jpg

More pushing and shoving and the inboard doors went on, as did the wheels.

51830463124_1c550a5f73_b.jpg

I had the kit gunsight made and as I tried to fit it, dropped it on the floor!  Found it, went to fit it again and it fell into the cockpit, rolled off the front of the floor and dropped into the fuselage proper.  Now if I was already swearing, it was as nothing compared to how much I swore then!  I shook the fuselage and I could hear the gunsight rattle about then go silent.  So I cobbled up some plasticard and rod, made a shelf and the rear part of the padded coaming, found and painted a QuickBoost Revi16B sight, sliced it lengthwise horizontally and stuck the top half to the top of the shelf, the other bit below. A bit of black paint in the gaps, add the clear bits and ready to go. Of course, I found the original sight on the floor a day later when the model was finished!

51830846705_37cfe3964d_b.jpg

Next the saga of the foot step.  Cleaned up, primed and painted, put it down to turn over the aircraft on the stand and off it went into wherever.  Gone!  I robbed another PCM kit for the footstep (I'll have to scratch build a new step for it later), painted it and ready to fit.

51830458414_eb0c736cfb_b.jpg

The home made Pitot tube fitted and painted.

51830620710_17c83af8c1_b.jpg

D/F loop and FuG 25a fitted, latter still not painted.

51830233673_d19182ffdb_b.jpg

I couldn't get the Hasagawa blown canopy to sit right (too high) so chopped off the tube underneath.  That made it sit too low so I added a bit of plasticard and it's more or less about right now.

51830849485_484133c50f_b.jpg

I used red painted 0.3mm Plastruct rod for the undercarriage down lock indicator pins.

51830013838_f86bacb3d0_b.jpg

That's the main bits done.
