Just catching up with your build Gaz, very nice work and your cockpit looks superb.

Regards. Andy

Thank you, Andy.  I have to give most of the credit to Eduard.

Hi Gary,

I wouldn't fill and re-scribe the panel line at the front of the cowl. I'd glue a thin strip of styrene to the front of the cowl and sand it back until the gap was even at the bottom corners of the cowling. Don't get me wrong. What you were proposing would work but a little shim of styrene card sanded back to where you need it may be easier and you don't have to worry about scribing. Just a thought`............

Cheers,

Wolf

That is a great idea, Wolf!  Thank you!

This build will get a pilot or two as well.

I've learned from previous experience that if I wait until the kit is finished to do the figure(s), my enthusiasm for the task is very small.  So, I'm including it in the build.  Hopefully it doesn't put anyone out of joint.

These are the ICM 1/32 3-pilots kit.  They are all broad-faced fellows which is something I don't really like.  I know there are broad-faced people...   but not many of them are fighter pilots.

But...  I will  continue with these anyway.

After priming, these guys got a face full of Tamiya flesh and a spritz of X-22.  Today they got the first layer of oils in burnt umber.

Happy modelling!

I don't know if this figure is still available but I thought this pose would be appropriate given the archive photos of Gottfried Weiroster...

It's a 1/32 resin figure of Waldemar Wubke by ICM.

Thank you, John that is a great figure!  Truth be told, I am planning on making a lawn chair with the USAAF seat cushion on it.  But I haven't seen it come up during any of my searches.  But it would be great for any build, really.

Hi friends!

Today's effort on both pilot and plane:

I started with the pilot.  I did the second round of oils...   red-browns

P1013975.thumb.JPG.599c11da8ef1f30889219

I imagine he'll look less rough in smaller photos.

The Barracuda upper wing bulges didn't work for me.  The port side didn't match the profile of the wing root.  To make matters worse, the other sides didn't align well, either.  So, I resolved  to reshape the bulges of the kit parts.  I'm only batting .500 with Barracuda resin, it seems.P1013977.thumb.JPG.5912bc165f8e6043dd6ea

I used black CA and baking powder to shape them the way they should be.  Then I used my electric toothbrush sander to neaten them up.  Finally I used undiluted Tamiya paint as a final filler for tiny imperfections.  It will have to dry overnight.

P1013978.thumb.JPG.9a4824227cfad978b0663

I also got to start putting the cowling together.  Thanks to Mr. Wolf Buddee, I was able to add some small length to the Barracuda portion of the cowling and dry fit it for a neat seam.

P1013981.thumb.JPG.e6567339843613dea6fb8

But you can see there is a small ledge along the resin part next to the supercharger intake.

To combat this, I have glued two lengths of sprue to opposite sides of the cowling walls.

Once they have dried overnight, I will squeeze the opposing sides together and clamp the pieces of sprue together then hit them with Tamiya extra thin or another thin welding cement.

Last but not least was the new resin oil cooler.

Happy modelling!

Today's effort was spent mainly on the cowling area and the reshaped wing bulges.  Maybe it was operator error.  But nothing fell together up front.  I'm still filling and fettling the MG 131 bulges.

The pilot got the blue layer on his face.  Under both eyes and in the shaving area.

I also used some oils on the bronze LG.

Although nice, these bronze pieces aren't nearly as nice as the Scale Ordinance Works LG.

Happy modelling!  My weekend is over...  boohoo

Nice progress Gaz. You are beating this thing into submission, which we all must do sometimes.

Nice figgys too.

Thank you, Mike.  I amazed how much beating it's taken.  As often as I hear '109's are done to death'  I'm waiting to find one that is done right.  I'm still learning on the figures.  It's really hard to confine your movements to such a tiny area.

I worked on the figure applying what will hopefully be the final flesh tone.

I'm hoping that the pupils and uniform bring him more to life.

Pilot is looking GREAT, Gaz.  Looks like a nicely molded figure, that always helped me get the details looking right.

Thanks mate.  It's not too bad...  the other two in the kit will get new heads as their jowls are too heavy for young soldiers...  or airmen.  But yes...   goodfiguresalmost paint themselves.

Anyway....   I have been blending.  Not perfect...   but I don't want to put the other surfaces through more sanding.

P1014004.thumb.JPG.9f3092812a2044e36c110

My filler of choice is CA.  And after each application - sanding - painting to check ...  I clean off the MRP lacquer with Bunnings 100% IPA.  Don't want paint buildup!

P1014005.thumb.JPG.03236d1c1e569df90c64b

It must have taken 7 or 8 attempts to get the edges smooth enough.  Same thing with reshaping the wing bulges.

P1014008.thumb.JPG.3599a54377a96b20bdfb9

P1014009.thumb.JPG.173496c61105f9193b2fe

Now came the time to dry-fit the wing parts.

P1014007.thumb.JPG.f95fc557eb5932145ad95

There are gaps on each side of the center sections which do not slide.  So, I will have to fill all flour gaps.

I think the best strategy would be to cement card to the Wing roots and outer wing pieces and then sand as needed.  I don't want to fill the panel lines just to have to rescribe them later.

Anyone got a better idea?

Thanks for looking!
