Just checked out those Eduard  wheels and they look the business dont they!

They do indeed! The only thing I don't like about Eduard's set is that the only way to get the main wheel covers is to buy their landing gear bay set. They provide a cover for the nose wheel, but not for the mains in the wheel set. But, as is typical for Eduard, you have to buy multiple sets to get all your bases covered. Gone are the days of interior photo etch and your seatbelts being in the same set!

There are some lovely mods going on here - a project to follow for sure!

I'm working on the D model on and off and the interior, even out of the box as I’m doing it, is taking forever! Despite its faults, it’s actually a really enjoyable build.

Looking forward to more!

Tom

  • Dennis7423 changed the title to WIP: 1/32 Hobby Boss B-24J "Callipygia": Fuselage Upgrades 2/2/2021

All-

When I left you last, I briefly spoke about the need for some scratch-building inside the nose. Hobby Boss molded stringers and formers in the cockpit and rear fuselage, only formers in the radio room area, and nothing in the nose. While it's only partially visible in the B-24J, I think these upgrades will be a must for anyone building a D model with the big greenhouse nose.

I wasn't going for extreme realism here, but merely provide something visibly pleasing and is relatively consistent with the remainder of the detail inside the fuselage. Here's what I came up with:

I think it will definitely fit the bill. With the cockpit section held in place, it will definitely look the part under some paint. You'll see, too, that I have added the dust cover between the bombardier's compartment and the nose wheel bay:

And, you'll be able to see it with the fuselage closed up:

I'll be adding a few more bits and bobs inside the nose, and then I'll be moving on to the cockpit. Hoping to start laying down some paint next time, too. Stay tuned!

Nice work Dennis! What's you thoughts on the nose profile? I read somewhere a while ago that it appeared to be a bit misshapen?

Craig

To my eye, the J model nose actually looks alright. Fortunately, there was so much variation in B-24 noses, that who can really tell? I know the D is a little off, but it's actually better than the Revell/Promodeller 1/48 kits. Overall, the kit has several shape issues, but at the end of the day, you gotta decide how much you wanna beat yourself up. I'm going for a mild drubbing. I'm confident it won't be mistaken for anything but a Liberator once it's complete.

I dare say it, I'm quite enjoying the build!

All-

Suppose its time for an update!

I have finished the upgrades to the cockpit, and completed the insert this past weekend. I'm quite pleased with how its turned out! Here's some photos for your enjoyment:

I used the Eduard interior set, and added some resin parachutes from the spares bin. Also, if you missed it the first time, I opened up and scratched several of the items in the radio room, which is non-existent in the kit:

Nothing too fancy, but something to give it a little more accuracy and some visual interest. I also added a Grey Matters Norden bomb sight, and moved the Bombardier's stool further back. I also added the dust cover between the nose and the nose wheel bay using some paper towel soaked in white glue. A resin parachute was added here, too:

Now that the cockpit and radio room are completed, I cam move on to the fuselage interiors, the nose gear bay, and then the bomb bay.

Thanks for tuning in! Appreciate it.
