Tora, Tora, Tora is one I come back to. The opening of Saving Private Ryan and end battles are pretty full on.
All Quite Western Front, Blue Max.

There was a German one about the Eastern Front- don’t remember the name

There have been others in which the battle scenes are good but the rest ...meh

like RedBaron

oh I really like both the Iwo Jima movies by Clint Eastwood.

I'll spare you the usual names and give you a couple that are not often mentioned but still worth checking out; The Winter War, made in Finland and the Russian made film, The Brest Fortress. Both pretty good European made movies that you don't see often.

Another one: Victory in the West (Sieg Im Westen). This is actually the restored documentary/propaganda film the Germans made after the fall of France. It is real footage as well as some re-enactments. Quite amazing really. It also has the propaganda video the Germans made to explain why they attacked Poland: German soldiers at the border lookouts supposedly attacked and killed by Polish soldiers (actually prisoners killed and put in German uniforms). Chilling.

I hesitate to state that I really enjoyed The Thin Red Line (1998), but I think that the film touched on some important realities of combat and the military that such movies rarely do.

I like the cinematography but I wished the film focused on a few characters.  It was a fine film.

Both Eastwood movies were great.  I really enjoyed Letters from Iwo Jima because you get the Japanese perspective on the war.  Toshiro Mifune played Rear Admiral in Storm Over the Pacific, (another Japanese perspective of the war) of which stock footage was used in Midway (1976)

Since a kid the # 1 for me is Battle of Britain.

Dive bomber. Yellow and silver everywhere.

Dark Blue World.

The battle of Sevastopol.

Midway.

The final countdown. F-14's and time travel. What's not to like? :)
