1:32 Boeing P-8A Poseidon?

With a little sun in the garden this afternoon, an opportunity to do the rebates for the stainless reinforcement rods in the rear wing sections.

Front and rear wing sections are now bonded together - with 2mm thick spars between leading and trailing sections.

Just dry fitted to fuselage at the moment - and minus the stainless steel rods that will run from root to tip for added strength.

Quick and dirty images on my mobile phone:

Happy to report that I think the wings will be plenty strong enough!

They'll be left somewhere warm for a couple of weeks so that the Revell Contacta glue can fully dry out/harden - then I'll bond the stainless steel rods in place with Epoxy - and make a start on sanding the wings.

The 3D sorcerer, Tim, did tell his apprentice that, having started on the 3D Printing adventure, he could make anything - I've taken him at his word - and this test piece seems to be coming together!!

Have FUN!

And an opportunity to dig 'Connie' out again for a quick comparison:

As my 'test piece' I'm learning important skills with the Poseidon that will be used to create the engines/cowlings/nacelles etc. on the Connie - she's not been forgotten about!!

Blue skies...

Thanks for your interest everyone.

I can thoroughly recommend having a 3D printer - of whatever type, although each platform has strengths and weaknesses.

Having a 3D printer has been the most liberating modelling tool I've ever had - and something that's slowly been restoring my modelling MoJo.

It really is hugely rewarding - and fun!  B)

Three Dimensional  tools are amazing.

They are amazing indeed Maru.

The tools that are now available for very reasonable money really are hugely impressive - and open up a whole raft of new opportunities...

With some sunshine over the weekend I was able to sit out on the patio and do some sanding - with my trusty sanding bar and some 100 grit wet and dry paper.

The styrene sheet 'spars' bonded into the wing had deliberately been made oversize - so they were between 1.5 and 2mm proud of the surface of the wing, on both upper and lower surfaces.

With the bonds fully dried out it was time to level these so they were flush with the wing surface - and the individual sections that make up each wing smoothed off where they joined.

That's now done - so next stage is to give the surfaces a smear of automotive polyester filler and sand back - smoothing out any surface imperfections and filling the very coarse surface 'detail' that's a hang over from enlarging the digital model from 1:100 to 1:32.

Surface details will then be re-scribed - once I've sanded down/thinned the overly thick trailing edges, a stage I'm not looking forward to and may take a few sessions to complete.

More when there's more - but another step forward...

With the sun being out for once here in the UK - and it being a national holiday - an opportunity to put on a pair of shorts and sit outside in the sun whilst sanding Poseidon wings.

Filler is a polyester based car body filler - quick to use and easy to sand.

Although 'easy to sand' isn't quite so easy when you have almost 8 feet of wing surface in total to sand!

Please excuse the legs - but included to demonstrate the absolute mess that results - why I do this outdoors - and why I now mostly smell of polyester resin!!  :)

The area where I actually did the sanding went white - and has had to be hosed down...

Still some flaws to address - I'll give it a coat of grey automotive primer later - that'll show up a lot of offending areas!

Need a break from heavy sanding now - off to work on the T.31 Glider again...

Have FUN!  B)

In further adventures of Poseidon: after lots of sanding, first primer coats on wings and tailplane.

Starting to look a little more like a 'proper' model now, and not a Fisher Price reject! :)

A lot of work to do now on thinning the trailing edges - waaay too thick as they are - but the wings are stable/solid and I'm reasonably happy it'll all work.

More when there's more...
