Creeperboy
HI i was wondering if the Westland whirlwind had Ailerons on the front of its wings?
R Palimaka
I believe you might be thinking of "slats" not ailerons, and yes the Whirlwind had them. Slats are extendable devices along the leading edge of the wing which increase lift at low speeds, like take-off and landing, climbing. From what I understand the slats on the Whirlwind were ordered wired shut after a couple of them crashed after the slats malfunctioned. I'm no Whirlwind expert, others will know more. Still though, cool looking aircraft! Richard Edited October 11, 2020 by R Palimaka Creeperboy, Out2gtcha, Martinnfb and 3 others 5
fastterry
The Whirlwind was designed with leading edge slats but I believe these were wired shut early on in it's career. TRF Creeperboy, R Palimaka and Martinnfb 2

fastterry
Funnily enough I have an I.D. vacform of the Whirlwind stashed away somewhere, maybe I could butcher it to scratch the flaps, the rest of you blokes are on your own. LSP_K2
I'd have to check my references, but I'm not sure the flaps need to be down anyway. Martinnfb and MikeC

LSP_Mike
Then do the flaps down silly. Add the slats extended to increase the dose. LSP_K2 and Creeperboy 1
