Ok, my first GB here :D

On the bench

I started this kit many years and several continents ago. Managed to get this far before packing up and moving off to the next employment location!

This kit also has my first rudimentary attempts at replicating uneven, stressed skins. Ive got a bit of a better grasp of it now, and will continue the effect over the airframe where applicable!

Time to make a plan of attack!

Update time!

Some fiddly fun to detail and change the cockpit layout to suit the RAAF example.

Cockpit sidewall pocket.

Burnishing foil over a piece of scrap plastic card.

Corrugated floorboards.

A pattern was made of plastic and and stretched sprue. Foil was burnished over the top and cut to size

Now to repeat x4!

Cockpit side consoles have also been altered. Original in the front pit, modified in the rear.

Little bit more work on the cockpit.

I didn't like the way the main wheel wells were constructed in the kit, so i chopped up the 'roof panel' and assembled each side onto its respective upper wing. This will make it easier to add some wiring and plumbing in the future.

Intakes have been assembled and filling has begun.

I'm trying out Bondo Glazing and Spot Putty on this build. I miss the old fashioned squadron Green and White!

Work begins on the front cockpit.

The reference pics on the website linked on my first post shows differences between the structure of the kit's cockpit sidewalls and cockpit divider, and the real thing. Out with razor saws.

Before

After

Moulds were taken of parts of the front cockpit panel to make copies of switches and knobs and things.

I figured I'd just build this kit OOB, and focus on the paint scheme, but as the build plods forwards, i'm finding more and more things to tidy up. Great fun!

Well done Denzil, fun is what it’s all about! The Hawk is coming along beautifully. :)

Thanks mate!

Its been a long time since I've built anything other than box-stock, so its a welcome return to building rather than just assembling :D

Liking the detailing!

What material is that for making the molds?

Alumilite mold putty.

Handy stuff, mix the 2 parts together and then you've got a couple of minutes to make your mold before it cures to the consistency of dried RTV silicon.

an aircraft I know very well

Thanks Derek! I'm going for representation, rather than flat out accuracy. If it wasnt for the enormous greenhouse, i'd not have bothered at all :D

Do you have involvement with the real things?
