Rick Griewski
I will kit bash the Special Hobby A5M4 (or A5M2b) kit with parts from Dave Thomas (Dave and Umi fame) resin trainer kit. mozart, Kagemusha, LSP_Kevin and 5 others
Rick Griewski
I put together a composite drawing of the A5M4K superimposed on the A5M2b using Canvas 2D drawing program. The arrows point to the areas of the kit that will be modified. The tricky area is moving the front cockpit forward just 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch. Note the strakes on the fuselage just forward of the fin. Rick Griewski
The donor kit and references. The Mushroom book is very good. The drawings in the Maru book are awesome. I will use two PE sets to dress up the cockpit. Rockie Yarwood, LSP_Kevin and Kagemusha

Rick Griewski
The kit fuselage and the top of the fuselage supplied in the resin kit by Dave Thomas to be used as a reference for kit modifications. I still want to build the resin kit but my tolerance for resin is low so the build drags on. Rick Griewski
The donor kit is not very complicated. Sprue shown below Enough for tonight. Rick Griewski
I assembled the donor kit to assess issues that are coming up. The wing and horizontal tail plane fit is very good. Intersection of the wing and the fuselage will require some sand-to-fit. I have some work to do on the underside of the wing at the rear. Rick Griewski
I rechecked the outline of the donor kit with the drawing of the trainer. Close enough for now. Kagemusha, BradG, LSP_Kevin and 1 other
Rick Griewski
The donor kit engine (A5M2b) seems too small compared with the cowl to me. Photos show a close fit inside the cowl. I was then nervous that I used the wrong donor kit. So I pulled out the Craftworks A5M4 kit. The A5MK trainers were built with A5M4s. So then interesting dilemma appeared when I compared the Williams Brothers engine and cowl from the Craftworks A5M4 kit. IIRC the A5M4 included an upgraded engine. I do not think the change would be this large of a size difference. Except for the difference in the size of the opening the two cowls are the same. I will proceed with the Williams Brothers engine in the donor kit so I can have a snug fit. Rick Griewski
Planning on landing gear strut enhancement and propeller hub enhancement using a copy of the part from the Craftworks kit. Rick Griewski
A look at where I will go going with the two seat arrangement. The resin kit provides a hollowed out area. The one seat will have to be replicated. Note the resin bulkheads and the seats with lightning holes (copies from ancient Zero kit?). The kit seat is probably over simplified. I have one full scope PE set. Note that the stringer structure extends behind the cockpit. I will use this as a guide during the build.
