Antonio Argudo
expecting to receive this kit in a few days, if anyone familiar with it, what are the main " shape accuracy issues" of this classic kit, anyone has compared the proportions with a drawing plan? am I wasting my money and time on this project/kit? lol cheers Edited August 5, 2020 by Antonio Argudo
DonH
Sorry, I cannot comment on the accuracy of the kit but if you build it and enjoy doing it, you have not wasted your money. JerseyChris, Dave T, Lothar and 2 others
Cees Broere
A kit of almost fifty years old? Airfix did their research well at the time within the capabilities that existed then. It is probably unbuildable by today's standard () but as Don says, enjoy it. Antonio Argudo, Lothar, Rick Griewski and 2 others 2
Shoggz
Shape-wise, I think all the old Airfix 1/24 scale kits hold up remarkably well. You could certainly pick them up over the levels of detail in cockpits and wheel wells particularly, but the shapes are pretty good I think. Archimedes
Hola Antonio Although I have not done a comparison between known drawings of the BF-109 E and the Airfix kit, I have taken Arthur Bentley's drawings of the Spitfire and Focke Wulf A Series and can say that the shape outlines for the fuselages and wings compare well. Don's point is well made therefore. Although these 50+ years old kits did not use Lidar scanning as the modern Airfix kits benefit from, the creators of the drawings and tooling really did do their homework and, in some cases, were examining airframes that were far more original than many of the restored warbirds we have available today. All of the 1/24 Airfix kits reflect the technnology available at the time so again, Don is right: if you wish to add high levels of detail to cockpits and engines then a degree of scratch-building is likely (but fun!). Antonio Argudo
thanks all for your replies, I will do some proportion research and post my conclusions once the kit is in my hands, cheers Pete Roberts, D Bellis, MikeMaben and 1 other 2
Archimedes
Hi Antonio This may interest you. It is a build of the same kit by Paul Ward. In it there is an article by the original pattern-maker for the Airfix 1/24 kits: Pat Tranfield. I hope you find it of interest. https://www.largescaleplanes.com/articles/article.php?aid=3276 Kind regards, Paul Antonio Argudo
Andrea Ferrari
Hola Antonio Just to get an idea, you might want to take a look of my build of a converted Airfix 1/24 Emil here - it's a wonderful old kit with a few glitches but no real outline accuracy issues: https://www.largescaleplanes.com/articles/article.php?aid=3361 Have fun, you'll love it! rafju
Antonio you can read at a build here: https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/airfixtributeforum/airfix-2017-messerschmitt-gb-dave-s-1-24-emil-buil-t50839.html and don't forget the book "Classic aircraft N°2 Me BF109 E-B, Their history and how to model them" dedicated to the 1/24 Airfix, 1972 ;-) Antonio Argudo
LSP_K2
Bob Letterman did a crashed scene using the kit many years back, but I really don't know what, if anything, he did to improve it. Antonio Argudo
Sabre F-86
Over the years I've heard nothing but good things about the Airfix 1/24 scale kits re shape. Rafju mentions a book that is well worth trying to find. The kit lends itself well to stuffing as much detail into it as you can stomach.
