P-47 just inside the cowling - what colour?

According to the Erection & Maintenance manual the cowlings (along with the firewall and cowl flaps) were left in anodized natural metal finish. Only the engine mounts were finished in yellow zinc chromate.

b. ANODIC TREATMENT
(1) .... The anodizing produces a surface of aluminum hydroxide in the work. Aluminum hydroxide has good corrosion resistance and provides an excellent bond for paint. It is soft and easily scratched, therefore the surface is given a coat of primer immediately after anodizing...

(c ) All interior and exterior parts and surfaces except those fabricated from the following alloys 
and when used as exterior surface covering of fuselage, wings, control surfaces and cowling.

(f) 3S
