Su-27 colors

Having struggled for weeks now with Vallejo's Air Color set for the Trumpeter 1/32 Su-25 I'm currently building - and having sworn never to fall for Vallejo's seductive packaging and clever marketing again - I'm now wondering what MrColor/Gunze (or even Tamiya, as a last-ditch resort) acrylics should I pick for my future project, Trumpeter's 1/32 big and beautiful Su-27. I am not familiar at all with Russian/Soviet blues and greys and their equivalent in the hobby - any suggestions about which MrColor/Gunze numbers should I choose? I don't really trust as usual Trumpeter's color calls, and I am asking now because they are not easy to come by here in Italy and I might end waiting for a long time before they are delivered given the current pandemic...Thanks to all kind enough to reply :)!

all gunze colours are  comming (at least before the pandemic) from Asia, with free shipping (search on ebay and tic the free shipping box) for about 3.50€

it mostly takes a week or two. that works in austria,so italy may not be very different

ciao

Here is what I used on mine

Pale blue FS35526 = 1xH45 + 2xH308 + 5xH11
Blue FS35190 = 5xH11 + 1xH308 + 1xH322
Grey  H308

All of this was heavily weathered and faded accordingly for this result:

Wip was here on the forum if I remember right and on my blog:

Yes, that is how I usually get them - eBay or online shops... I just don't know which ones should I order to finish a Su-27 in those beautiful Soviet blues and greys.

What about MRP paints? They have Su-27 specific colors. Anyone tried those?

Those look interesting as they do not need custom mixing, but I would love to hear from somebody who has been consistently using them. I am tired and frustrated by Vallejo's inconsistencies from one bottle to the next and I'd like to tread on firmer ground from now on...

Andrea,

the above mix gives this result, which IMHO was too contrasted

So I simply lightened the whole thing with a mist of light blue:

For some strange reason the light grey you used on your Su-27 shows up as a pale pink on my monitor...

Does on mine, too. I was wondering about those color mixes... ;)

pale pink :)

really?

Probably a colour white balance issue induced with the blue background? sorry about that

:) that light grey err pale pink  is the only colour that came out of the gunze with no mix at all; it's plain H308. ;)

I do use them since they hit the market (they were not available when I used Gunze on the above Su-27)

They are great and spray just fine. The colours are much more specific than the gunze and nowadays I use them more than gunze.

So definitely give them a shot, they are great and nothing like the vallejo range IMHO.

Excellent, thanks!

Anybody cares to comment on these: HATAKA: Red Line Set (6 pcs) Early Su-27S/P/UB "Flanker-B/C" paint set ?

They are readily available in Italy but I have no idea about their quality or airbrushing properties...

I have been following the work of Ken Duffey, aka "Flankerman" since I came across his work in Scale Models International magazine back in the early-nineties. On his website he has an old article about the Su-27 kits and at the bottom of the page he lists the colours. http://www.flankers-site.co.uk/su27surv.htm You can use the FS numbers on that page to find the equivalent paint from your favourite paint manufacturer using this https://www.paint4models.com/index.html

Flankerman recommends Testors enamels. He also recommends the White Ensign enamels which are now available as "Colorcoats" from Sovereign Models.

Also, see this article: http://www.flankers-site.co.uk/modl_trump_flanker.html
