1/32 Hasegawa P-47 "Oh Johnnie"

Hello.

Been away from the bench and the site for a bit.  Been swamped with work, but I've also had a few stalled projects that possibly stalled because they were too involved.

Decided to get back into it with a simple mostly out of the box build of the Hasegawa P-47.

Didn't unfortunately take a lot of in progress photos because I wasn't sure about doing a build log.

The P&W R2800 is OOB.  The more I look at it the more likely I think I will add some wiring to it.

I used a Eduard "Look" set for the instrument panel and the harness.  They're not nearly as nice as HGW, but for a 10 minute job not too bad.  The information placards aren't 100% accurate and the oxygen hose isn't correct.  Just thought I'd busy up the very visible cockpit area.   I need to weather everything up further before I seal it them up in the fuselage and cowl.

I plan on marking it up as LT Ray Knight's "Oh Johnnie".  Mostly because I have a 4yr old at home who loves the Goofy on the unit emblem on the fuselage.

Thanks for looking, hopefully I'll be able to get this one through to the finish line for a change.

Small update.

Went ahead with wiring up the 2800.  I used some brown craft wire I found in a dollar store.  Looking at some other online builds I noticed a lot of people drilled out the connection points for the ignition ring.  I'm not that much of a masochist so I just fixed them behind hoping that staring at the engine through a closed cowl will hide that fact.

Used some Ammo "Starship filth" for the weathering and some small chips and scratches.

Hoping to finish up the cockpit tonight and make some progress on this build.

Cheers

Hi again.  Hopefully everyone is staying safe.    Work has ground to nearly a standing halt so I'm hitting the bench to alleviate some stress

Very minor progress but got the cockpit sealed up and ready for installation.  Decided to wire behind the instrument panel because it's a visible area when completed.

Also managed to get the infamous 4 piece cowl around the engine.  Fit was ok, but I wonder what it'll look like under primer.  I was surprised at the number of sinkmarks my copy had.  Two on the cowl, two on the fuselage and 4 on the wings.  Is that common to this kit or my typical luck?

Just had to test fit it to see if it'd fit in my Ikea Detolf display case.  It looks like it'll sneak in by literally MMs.

Thanks for looking.

Hello.

Been slowly working on the P-47 but don't have much by way of photos of the boring stuff.  Mainly filling, rescribing, sanding and priming.

Since the bird I'm building has Bare metal wings and OD/NG fuselage I thought it might be easier to spray the wings first as they'd be easier to mask then the fuselage.

Used stynylrez primer and glossed the wings with Alclad Aqua Gloss in preparation for the bare metal.  Gloss didn't turn out perfect, but I did learn Aqua Gloss is pretty solid once it's set.  It took micromesh sanding well.

I used Alclad Airframe Aluminium on the wings as they were replacements and I wanted them to look relatively new compared to the fuselage.  As it stands they're too shiny, but clear coats and weathering will hopefully knock that down.

I apologize for the photos, it looks better in person.  The pics seem to be reflecting the black primer on the fuselage

No a huge update but a little progress at least.  A few metres of Tamiya tape and 4-5 shades of Alclad and the wings are about done.  I'm worried the different shades might be overdone, but hopefully weathering will tie it all together.

I'm going to test some clear coats on a test scrap to see which knocks the shine down the least (any suggestions are greatly appreciated) and move forward to the markings and OD/NG fuselage.

Looks great Jeff. The Alclad work looks really nice. I can't help very much on a clear coat since I'm just doing my first bare metal finish. So far I have put some Tamiya X-22 gloss clear to seal the Alclad and do a panel line wash. I'm not sure what I'll use over that though. Maybe some Alclad Light Sheen clear?

Well it's been about a month.

I've been slowly working on the Jug but unfortunately not documenting my work too carefully.

First time using masks for painting the markings.  Honestly one of the most satisfying things I've done since returning to the hobby.  I used Gunze and Tamiya paints as I can't find MRP in Canada yet.

Lots more work to come, but it's a start.

Thanks for looking and stay safe.

Hello again.

Very quick update.  I was working on adding the unit insignia and some stenciling.

After everything was in place I noticed that the port side insignia decal was missing the umbrella on Goofy's plane entirely.

After sleeping on it I decided to use a photocopy of the unit insignia to create a triangle template that would match the umbrella.

I transferred it to a small piece of scrap red walkway decal and cut it to shape.  I free handed the umbrella shaft and admit it's not perfect.  In my defense it's about .5mm and that was about as fine a line as I could get.

Not identical and not perfect but better then nothing.  Hopefully I can seal all the decals under a 2nd clear coat tomorrow and move forward with the project.

Thanks for looking.
