Iain
As if by magic - I now have a complete airframe that's off into a warm airing cupboard for an overnight dry-out: More tomorrow - maybe... BradG
A warm airing cupboard, how posh, I call that the kitchen bench in my house Landrotten Highlander and Iain
Iain
Kitchen bench? Well, I could have put it on the Aga, if you want posh... But I'd have been posting a lump of melted and incinerated plastic this morning! Anyway - our airing cupboard isn't in the kitchen - so it's not posh! Off to do a wee bit of sanding, maybe... Iain
Didn't actually get much done over the weekend - although the joints did get more time in a warm place. Have now blended in the nose intake ring to the rest of the fuselage (small step on one side, re-scribed lost detail and filled some very minor lines where tip tanks fit to wings, wings fit to fuselage and jet pipe attaches to fuselage. I've also removed the really nicely done canopy parts from their sprues for a clean up and trial fit. Test fit of canopy parts - excellent! My 'go to' filler of choice where I have a fine crack along a panel line/joint that needs filling - but leaving a subtle line afterwards: Apply to joint with something like a cocktail stick, then simply wipe away the excess with dampened kitchen towel: Still some work required before primer, but making good progress. Now - first all metal airframe for a long time and, for this, I'm going to use my current favourite - fine pigment and very forgiving in use - Xtreme Metal. I need to spray some test pieces in next few days and see if I can get it to work with the, new to me, Humbrol Clear products - in Gloss, Satin and Mat finishes. I want a good looking aluminium finish - but one that's weathered, rather than shiny. Would rather wreck a test piece than the model - will let you know how I get on... More when there's more! Iain
It's definitely a fun build - and a great pity they haven't done more to this standard... However, one fly in the soup I noticed this morning - moulded location tabs inside the sliding section of the canopy. It's not just that they are there - but they could, at least, have aligned them with one of the vertical reinforcement straps on the outside. Half way along the canopy sill - you can see the light catching part of it. So - out with a fresh scalpel blade and the polishing kit later today - should be reasonably straightforward to remove. Dutch Man
Very tempting to just purchase this beautiful kit. Looking at your build it must be a fun ride. I got a reminder on the filler, long waited but now it's on the way to my doorstep(I immediately checked with BNA in Australia) Always have trouble with fillers, so see what this brings, (also some other material on purchase I need for the Sabre). Hope Thai customs is friendly on the P.O. from outside Thailand. They blocked the purchase from China. 2 models I bought are on hold now for more than 1 month already. Looking forward to see some paint on the F-84G. Kind regards, Robert Jan Iain, Out2gtcha and Derek B
Out2gtcha
Looks great Iain! I've heard that this is one of their A team kits for sure.
Iain
With a new blade, 800, then 1200, then 2000 grit wet and dry - followed by Novus Plastic Polish and those aberrations are gone - just a final polish needed: I need to fill the rivets on the external reinforcement straps - then a few tweaks to airframe and we're heading towards primer. Control surfaces next... Thanks for looking in - I think we're on track to actually finish this! Alain Gadbois
Nice correction on the canopy! Alain daveculp
Iain
Thanks Alain - it would have bugged me if I hadn't removed them! Control surfaces on - we have an F-84: Parked Thunderjets have flaps retracted - so lugs cut off and fitted in the 'up' position. Plan is to get primer on at some point tomorrow... I do wish more kits were like this - simple parts breakdown, reasonably accurate, great fit. Just assemble and paint - makes a nice change from my usual battles! Dpgsbody55
Nice looking model so far. I'm looking forward to see how it turns out. The F-84 is one I'd love to add to my stash and you're making it hard for me to resist getting one. Cheers, Michael Iain
mozart
Blimey Iain, you’re cracking on with this build and obviously getting a lot of enjoyment out of it, lovely job my friend. Iain
Iain
Got sidetracked elsewhere - but some more progress on the Thunderjet today - polishing of main canopy repairs now done and all sparkly! Centre panel of windshield tinted a very slight blue/green with Tamiya clear and everything bonded in place - masking next then we should be ready for a coat of grey primer: Have fun and stay safe!
