FG-1D With Fixed Wings

Recommended Posts

The majority of Goodyear built FG-1Ds (per Dana Bell) were built as land based ground attack aircraft.  To save weight, the wing fold hydraulics and hardware were deleted, and the wings fixed in the extended position.  The joint line was taped and painted.  Dana just sent this photo taken aboard the Ticonderoga in November '44.  If you can't read it, the scrawl on the side of the fuselage says "WINGS DO NOT FOLD".  So there ya go!

My bet is the Tico was delivering the aircraft to the SWPA.  In November '44 she entered combat for the first time, so I'd say she was delivering the FG-1Ds to the Jarheads someplace between Pearl and Ulithi.
