Sprue Cutters?

As for cutters, I use Tamiya snips.  But I may need to up my game with the God Hand or Dspiae.  I find myself repairing sprue gate divots way too often.

Same same, only I'm still using some off brand junk nippers I got at the 2011 US NATs.   I find the Dspiae ST-As  cutters pretty nice. I think Im going to have to break down and get a set. There are only so many times you can fix divots like that and feel ok about it.

Just got the ST-A couple days ago. Whole new ballgame. The only thing I found kind of strange is that they provide an allen tool to adjust the blade gap but no tool to hold the nut which, considering how high end everything else is, is a minor but annoying oversight. Oh, and throwing the box away isn't easy either.

So I was trying to find one of these Dspiae cutters online (in Europe) and drew a blank. Even the local Fleabay shops listing them note "shipping from China". Do you guys have any reasonably priced sources, preferably in the old world (L'europe) or do I have to bite the bullet and order via their official Ali shop from China and wait anywhere from 1-2 months?  Tbh I'd prefer not to order through Ali because of the 4 orders I've made 2 ended in disputes due to stuff not being shipped - this being well before the batman-eating-virus popped up... and also delivery time. The only area where I seem to be able to muster infinite amounts of patience is with the female species - waiting for goodie delivery is rather short fused... ;)

Same struggel different day - I couldn't find the Dspiae ones either (for a reasonable price). Instead I went with the Trmpeter offering (single blade nipper) which looks the same and works just fine.

I use a cheap (or at least it was cheap way back when purchased) punch and die set to make small plastic circles or very small dot-masks - I think it is a knock off of the old "Waldron punch and die" set that was advertised around model magazines back in the day. I don't have the best luck with the Silhouette cutting tiny circles but I may have not had it set right (though it cuts just fine on anything that is not tiny....)

edit - oops I was reading page 2 of this conversation where it seemed to have drifted into talk on circle cutters

I use a Tamiya sprue cutter for now at leat 5 years, still cuts like on the very first day.

Was a bit pricey then, but it was well worth the cost.

I also used Tamiya's cutter for years. Even bought a second one in case the first one would stop working, just as a backup. Then I tried the one-side cutting Dispae. What a difference! Exact and clean cuts that often not even needed sanding after cutting!

Just for fun I also but the cheap Trumpeter one. Works the same. Now the Dispae is the backup cutter. Never turned back to other cutters.

So to report back. After some more digging and searching (everything short of the dark web ;)) I was unable to find any source in Europe that had the Dspiae in stock. So i opted to go for the Trumpeter (=Master Tools) single blade nipper (Item no. 09990), paid more than I care to admit (still less than what I see for the Dspiae on Ali), and took delivery of it today. My first impression was "oi, that thing is tiny". I sort of expected it to be larger, somewhat like a regular ("toolbox size") cutter. Then I tried it out on a few bits and bops from my latest acquisition, the Roden Fokker DR.1 (601), and must say I am pleasantly surprised at the easy of cutting and the quality of the cut. This is a revelation.

So thanks to Fanes and Wurzacher for pointing me in the direction of the Trumpeter / Master Tools single blade nipper - solid advice! Add a recommendation for it from myself as well :)

Aren’t the Meng sprue cutters just rebranded Dspiae?  They look identical.

Even though I have the Meng cutters, I mostly use the tweezer style ones that I got from Micro Mark.

Yes they are, mine are Meng, they still cost an arm and a leg but they are still worth the amputation!

Dspiae either make or licence that cutter,  Meng, Mr Hobby, Volks all same design single blade cutter. I have had a Facom angled one for a few years great but costly.

If you are a tool junkie check out Facom or Lindstrom total pornography for model makers.

I've been using the Huron Shear 2175 for the final cut (and my old Hurons for cutting through the thicker attachement) and am pretty happy with that.  It doesn't leave a divot, and if it doesn't cut cleanly I can run a #11 across the edge and that takes care of any remainder.

I'm wondering if the DSPIAE or the Trumpeter Trumpeter (Master Tools) single blade nipper (Item no. 09990) mentioned above do a better job?
