F-4 Horizontal stab

Recommended Posts

A long while back I posted a photo of the F-4C on display at Pima, showing a visible crack between the inboard (unpainted) part of the horizontal stab and the outboard (painted) part.  Someone claimed that was an artifact of it being a non-operational museum artifact.

I was just watching “Threshhold”, the film put out by the Blue Angels about their F-4s, and I noticed this.  It’s not super clear in this screen grab, but in the film you can clearly see daylight in that crack, and the trailing edge inboard doesn’t exactly match the trailing edge outboard.  One or the other part is slightly twisted, giving a discontinuity in the line of the trailing edge.

Anyone know for sure if that was normal?  It sure appears to be...
