I have been steadily plugging away, and should be ready for paint in the very near future. I elected to paint and attach the cowling after the fuselage is completed, to aid in masking and installation of the exhausts. I tried Vallejo airbrush acrylics for the first time, I am was pretty impressed! Looking forward to using them more in the future, and getting more comfortable with them. I have a few rough spots of the fuselage paint to smooth out, and I am still working on getting a nice smooth transition between the fuselage and the upper fuselage insert. They go on much thicker than enamels, which takes some getting used to, but I am enjoying the color density and saturation. Dennis7423 Posted March 2, 2020 Author Share Posted March 2, 2020 Another small update today... I finally got the fuselage steps squared away, and the paint blended it. It was time to start on the markings. I had finally decided that I wanted a Russian aircraft in my display cabinet, and what better opportunity to add one with some script on the side (which seemed pretty popular during WWII). One of the kit options seemed like just the ticket. White 11, with script on the sides that reads (after some grateful direction from the interwebs) "Death to the Fascists!" and "For Stalin!". These markings were presented as decals, but I was nervous about such large scripts developing silvering between the letters. Montex makes a mask set for this kit, and while I had never used Montex masks before, this was my change to give them a shot. Might as well! I should get some more bench time this week, and I just might have this little guy completed by next week sometime. Not too much else to do now! dennismcc Posted March 3, 2020 Share Posted March 3, 2020 A fine job, you are really doing it justice, I do have a thing for VVS subjects and this kit is really getting me interested, I like the large slogans on the side of the aircraft and used Montex masks on my MiG-3 which included a fuselage slogan. I felt like taking on the challenge of the black-outlined red stars that are part of this aircraft. While I have been able to, for the better part of several decades, to get away with not priming underneath enamels, acrylics aren't the same bag. I'll do that next time for sure! Fortunately, the fix is pretty easy. I have brush-painted a few layers of the same paint on, and it filled in the gaps nicely. I will give it a nice sanding to level it out, and then airbrush a thin layer to blend everything in. Piece of cake, and only a minor setback. More to come! I have started constructing the landing gear, and will work on some more of the fiddly bits in the next few days (hopefully). I think it'll take about a week or so to call this one done!
