ICM I-16 Type 24: COMPLETED 3/12/2020

Recommended Posts

What happens with the wife is out of town for the weekend? All sorts of bench time, that's what.

I have been steadily plugging away, and should be ready for paint in the very near future. I elected to paint and attach the cowling after the fuselage is completed, to aid in masking and installation of the exhausts. I tried Vallejo airbrush acrylics for the first time, I am was pretty impressed! Looking forward to using them more in the future, and getting more comfortable with them. I had a hard time finding a Model Master enamel for Russian topside green, but the Vallejo color was spot on.

That's all for this morning! Looking forward to plugging on it more throughout the day. It's dumping snow outside, so its a perfect day to snuggle up to the work bench and get cozy.

Moving right along!

I have a few rough spots of the fuselage paint to smooth out, and I am still working on getting a nice smooth transition between the fuselage and the upper fuselage insert. Slow and steady, right?

I am using Vallego acrylics, and they are lovely. They go on much thicker than enamels, which takes some getting used to, but I am enjoying the color density and saturation. They are nice, lovely colors and I am looking forward to trying some more of them on some other projects.

More to come! The finish line is in sight.

Another small update today...

I finally got the fuselage steps squared away, and the paint blended it. It was time to start on the markings.

I had finally decided that I wanted a Russian aircraft in my display cabinet, and what better opportunity to add one with some script on the side (which seemed pretty popular during WWII). One of the kit options seemed like just the ticket. White 11, with script on the sides that reads (after some grateful direction from the interwebs) "Death to the Fascists!" and "For Stalin!". These markings were presented as decals, but I was nervous about such large scripts developing silvering between the letters. Montex makes a mask set for this kit, and while I had never used Montex masks before, this was my change to give them a shot. I was duly impressed!

I was going to use the kit markings for the red stars, but I think I will continue with the masks and spray those on as well. Might as well!

I should get some more bench time this week, and I just might have this little guy completed by next week sometime. Not too much else to do now!

As always, comments and critiques are most welcome. Thanks for tuning in!

A fine job, you are really doing it justice, I do have a thing for VVS subjects and this kit is really getting me interested, I like the large slogans on the side of the aircraft and used Montex masks on my MiG-3 which included a fuselage slogan.

Cheers

Dennis

I decided, what the heck, let's go ahead and use the Montex masks to do the rest of the air frame! I felt like taking on the challenge of the black-outlined red stars that are part of this aircraft. Things sure came out great!

Then, as I was removing the masks on the bottom, disaster (minor) struck:

It's here that I learned a very, very important lesson about airbrushing acrylics: You gotta do a primer. While I have been able to, for the better part of several decades, to get away with not priming underneath enamels, acrylics aren't the same bag. I'll do that next time for sure!

Fortunately, the fix is pretty easy. I have brush-painted a few layers of the same paint on, and it filled in the gaps nicely. I will give it a nice sanding to level it out, and then airbrush a thin layer to blend everything in. Piece of cake, and only a minor setback.

More to come! I have started constructing the landing gear, and will work on some more of the fiddly bits in the next few days (hopefully). I think it'll take about a week or so to call this one done!

As always, comments and critiques are always welcome.

The finish line is oh-so near...

Well boys and girls, just about done with this one. Just want to do a little bit more weathering and some paint chipping where appropriate, but the next photos of this little gem of a kit will be in Ready For Inspection in the next few days.

Thanks for tuning in along the way! This is the fastest I have completed a model kit in probably 15 years, and I usually only complete maybe one or two a year. This is a big accomplishment for me!

What should I build next...
