Rob Colvin
It is my understanding that during the second deployment to Vietnam the 104s were painted in SEA and RWR gear was added ( I may be off here). Did the 104s still perform escort duty at this time? I though I saw where they went up with a gun only due to NVAF reluctance to engage the starfighter. Does anyone have a pic of a SEA painted bird with 4 external tanks (2 wing tip/ 2 under wing)? Thanks
Ben Brown
I've found a couple of photos of camouflaged F-104s without the RWR sensor fairings. One is on the Starfighter site linked above and shows two F-104Cs with 750 lb bombs on the inboard pylons. Here's a photo of another one without the RWR: LINK I'm wondering if the RWR recievers were installed in-country at some point after they deployed? The nose art also appears to have been a late-deployment addition. Ben Swatto

It seems that in 66, none of the -104's were updated with RHAW equip, this was only retrofitted a year later. As far as the comment in the first post about the NVAF being reluctant to engage the Starfighter, I highly doubt this was the case.....
