Hasegawa F-4EJ Eggplane

The Hasegawa F-4EJ Eggplane kit originally was issued with a figure, holding a M61 Vulcan gattling gun. The boxing I have, kit No. 60105, does include the Phantoms cartoon mascot but the gun was not present. Since on his left side, his hand is molded as if holding a handle, I decided to make a Vulcan for him to intimidate MiGs with.

The gun came from the 1:48 AMT A-10 Thunderbolt. The barrels were removed and I grabbed a jewelers hand vise (that I bought originally to help me build 1:32 landing gear), in order to make six uniform gun barrels out of brass tube.

Once the length of the tube was set with the gauge, the protruding end was filed with a Tamiya 400 grit diamond file, flush with the surface of the vise.

I copied the photoetched fret from the set above, on my printer. The image was increased 150%, which enlarged the holes to the correct size, that fit the Albion Alloy brass tube I have on hand.

The image was taped to some sheet styrene and a fine point was pressed into the center of each barrel location. Then, progressively drilled out.

Below, the plastic parts are test fitted before final sanding, which I think will be easier to do after everything is glued together.

Really, this was an excuse to practice using the jewelers hand vise. I would rather start fooling around with something like an eggplane gun, than landing gear for a 1:32 P-38.

Looking kind of rough at the moment but the bulk of the work is completed. A real good way to spend the evening!

Hi GDW,

Hope you are well and wondering if you have any updates on the build of this gorgeous F-4!

Hi Michael,

I am doing very well, thank you!

I have temporarily stopped working on the eggplane in order to complete another model for my friends movie (It's a big one). After that, I am looking forward to jumping right back into working on this.

I am so glad you like it, my favorite model to date. Thanks for all of your comments, likes and encouragement Michael.

Happy 4th of July too!

Ok, I have blown the dust off of this project and tried out some MRP paints that I have wanted to compare with the AK Real Colors I picked up a long time ago.

My airbrush Kung Fu is seriously rusty. I struggled to freehand the MRP FS 35109 on a spare eegplane paint mule. Base coat is MRP FS 35526. A lot more practice is needed to level up my airbrushing, before I'm confident enough to shoot the model. Next up, blast the other side with AK Real Colors.

1" × 1" spray out cards of both manufacturers FS 35526 and FS 35109.

The low grade cell phone pic is not good for seeing how they actually look to the naked eye, the MRP 35109 Aggressor Blue  appears much darker than it looks in person. The Light Sky Blue 35526 is more blue as well.

Below are the results of the AK Real Color 1st try.

Yikes! Spray pattern not to tight on the top of the wing...

Better on the vertical stabilizer and stabilator.

I thinned the AK Paints 60:40 thinner to paint.

Not really that much of a difference if building up thin layers at a time. The only stark difference between the brands, occurs if one is comparing fully coated, opaque applications.

AK left side, MRP right.

I don't think I could go wrong using any combination of these. What I decided to go with is the MRP Light Sky Blue and the AK Real Color Agressor Blue.

Now, I need to practice, a lot! And I mean really, really put a good deal of time perfecting my ability to freehand a scheme like this on a 3" long model and achieve a excellent result.

Later friends!
