Hi Guys,

It's not quite finished, there's nowhere to put a model that big in my little house.  So I went to the BMSS model show at Bristol yesterday and bought some paint and this base.  It needs sanding and sealing and painting and, well, everything really.  The launch trolleys were meant to be used on hard runways so it will either be tarmac or concrete with a few painted lines and some skid marks.  Might be a figure or two, might not.

So I'll be back with this one in a while.

Hi Guys.

Here's roughly where we were at:

Now I wasn't happy with the ladder, it didn't look safe and it would be awkward to get off it into the cockpit, so I thought "we need a stand"  I happened to have some Evergreen rod (actually tube), some plasticard and another hairbrained scheme.  So here goes:  This was my design sketch!

My starting point was the Special Hobby V-1  trolley - a chassis with some wheels and tow bars, that's half way there, surely?  Here it is with some V-1 specific details removed and a start on the frame vertical rods.

Not much yet, is it?

Starting the end frames.

Progress!

Wobbly at this point.

End frames, the underside of the top platform and some diagonal struts.

Adding the diagonal bracing:

Bracing done and the access ladder in place.

Adding the safety rail.  It's very basic, not up to modern safety standards.

AS it stands right now, ready to paint.  I'll give it a day to let the cement dry fully and check the whole thing hasn't twisted.

An earlier test run against the fuselage to check access into the He-162.  It's high enough to allow the pilot to step over the sill into the cockpit easily. Also enough room for a crewman to assist him.

Hope you like it, I think it's better than the plain ladder, you may think otherwise.

Hi Guys,

Some more progress.

Some MMP German Dark Yellow on the stand.  A lot of Luftwaffe ground equipment seems to be in this colour from 1943 onwards and can be seem on things like Power Carts, Fuel Bowsers and kettenKrads.

Making sure it fits!

I bought some MDF sealer and threw it on the base I bought last week.  After a bit of elbow grease I airbrushed on some Stynylrez Black Primer. And here's the Mistel base so far with the He-162 plonked on top for scale.  My spray booth is pretty big but this was a struggle.

When I moved into my current abode ten years ago after divorce number 2, I had some round bases somewhere but could never locate them.  I was looking for brushes and sanders in the garage and moved a cloth on the bottom shelf of one of the racks not knee deep in kits and under a pack of ceramic tiles, there were the discs!!!  Ten years!  So they've had some sanding and sealing and priming as well.  I've only done eight so far out of a total of 23.

Gunze PS-290 0.5 will push out Stynylrez all day long.

Just the edges will be black, I'm planning some masks to paint the top surface in a nice scheme.  This is a captured Ki-84 from a while ago.

That's it for now.

Hi Guys,

Back with the Mistel, still making the base for it.  I sealed the base, sanded it and primed then primed it with Stynylrez Black Primer, then put on a Gloss Black coat.  It came out pretty crap to I sanded back and eventually decided to just use the Stynylrez  Black Primer as the finished layer.

Tim Perry (Wunwinglow) had liberated some wide strips of plasticard and gave me a pile and it looked favourable to make a basis for a concrete runway.  The wheeled dolly of the Mistel wasn't designed to run off grass, far too risky, and needed a hard topped runway.  So I decided on a concrete version, recently build by inducted, forced and slave labourers, which is almost certainly what the Nazis would have done if the war had gone into 1946.  So I was after a clean if not exactly ship shape concrete finish.

I started off by laying the strips across the base at an angle to measure up and align things.

49222096733_7fcfd9167c_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

Then marked out the section divisions, scribed them and marked them with a sharpie.

49222095233_38da8026fa_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

As usual, it didn't quite go to plan!  But I managed to recover the situation later.

49222062583_34c41c5594_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

After a blast with a mix of Grey and White primers mixed 50:50.  Too dark but it's a starting point.

49222069018_5f03b0b935_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

Next step was a cloud pattern of the White and Grey primers, this time mixed 90:10.  I followed up with Mr Color Sail Color mixed with a fair amount (=a lot!) of Mr Levelling Tinners and added it with varying intensity to random sections, mainly to break up the uniform grey.

49222775222_6f72e7836f_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

I still wasn't happy, now too brown, so I used Mission Models Light Ghost Grey mixed with their Transparent Medium and Thinners as a tone down coat.  This brought it back to a reasonable concrete grey shade.  Then out with panel line washes to represent the section gap seals, crack and a few stains.

Finally, off with the tape on the surround.

Hi Guys,

Well I managed to finish off the base and here it is with the trolley and airframes in place, just a test to see what it looks like.

49239758231_83f8e0e616_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

I thought I would add these figures from Master Box to the diorama but notice the ground crew member seems to have misplaced his thumb!

49239923552_211a2344f8_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

so I drilled the stump......

49239848092_47ce1bfdef_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

….added a brass pin.....

49239854912_5e84204c41_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

...then some Green Stuff epoxy putty to build a new thumb.

49239278003_484bba2ef7_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

Then onto the next item, Zoukei-Mura's KettenKrad airfield tractor.  It's a neat kit but missing lots of details.

49239925572_223c69f119_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

I have an etched set for the KettenKrad but can I find it?  So back to basic scratch building, like cutting out the moulded plastic mesh and adding etched brass screen.

49239882107_46c490fb77_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

Ignition leads.

49239185878_bc08117aac_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

Normal and steering brake linkages.

49260632817_cea44af41b_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

Clutch and brake pedals, parking brake lever, bolts, etc.

49260047123_0cf26b6a2e_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

Didn't like the instruments  much....

49260485466_8493cb3ee2_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

...so I drilled and filed out the holes, blanked underneath then dropped in plasticard discs to bring up the instrument faces.

49260436276_80b7917e3a_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

Fingers holding it all together while I use the iPhone to do the photo.

49260631587_be596b0aa1_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

And I'll be adding Zoukei-Mura's neat power cart as well.

And if I don't post again for a while, have a great Xmas break Guys and a Happy New Year.

Regards,

Bruce Crosby
