Hi Guys,

Back with another project that's going ahead at a cracking pace.  I was at the Essex Model Show a few weeks ago and saw a Dragon 1/48 Mistel 6 on the shelf of one of the traders.  So out with the fivers and I'm now the proud new owner.  The week after was the Avon Show and I was on our club stand (Wiltshire Scale Modellers) and met up with Wunwinglow who took the kit with the intention of scaling up some of the parts and making them in 3D.  Also got my hands on the new Revell Me-262A single seater courtesy of Andy Hills at Antics Models, another club member.  I had already sourced the He-162 online, ordered a CMK Ejection Seat and a Yahu IP.

A Kit:

Hi Guys,

Yes, there's more to it!

My contribution to our club stand at Avon.

A start on the new Revell 1/32 Me-262A.  Lovely kit!

The two airframes taped together, testing parts fit prior to committing cement.

The 262 is going to be made as a rebuilt fighter, cockpit blanked off, undercarriage, guns, ammo bins removed.  the whole nose ahead of the forward fuel tank is one section so I'm guessing they would remove it to get the gear and ammo boxes out, so might not go back on the same airframe.  it's going to be a Bitza!

Carving urethane block to shape for the cockpit cover plate.

Adding thin plastic sheet over the cockpit:

So far, so good.

Part three:  Be very afraid!

Well, I've gone and done it now!  Butchered Revell's latest kit.  But all in a good cause.

Meanwhile, back in Bristol ……….

...…...Wunwinglow has been a busy boy!

Now you guys may not be impressed but I certainly was!  Piles of 3D printed bits as well as a pretty picture!

Our man Tim also made parts for the main Take-off Dolly with laser cut acrylic sheet.  I fogged it with a sander to see what I was doing, its ultra clear.

Good job I've got a lot of Super Glue!

And here's one we made earlier!

Struts from Brass Rod inside old Contrail plastic tubing:

Does it fit?

It fits where it touches!

Blimey! It lines up!

As you can see, I put a bit of Wiggle room in the mounting holes.

I liberated a couple of boosters from the trumpeter 262 kit...….

…..and drilled out the venturis.

How much more can you take?

Let's see, where are we?  Ah yes, building a Mistel!  The story so far, I know, get on with it!

No supports, just a quick look for obvious mistakes.

48599459831_573409c596_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

First obvious thing:  The outrider wheels fouled the engines so I added some 1mm card to the inside bogie faces.

48611193641_45e16c9ebf_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

The boosters fitted nicely onto the 262.

48611033668_50aaecb597_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

A big slot under the 262, need all the wiggle room I can get here!

48611776147_23d951aa9a_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

I drilled and added brass wire to locate the struts on the 262 underside, with two pads, the top one fitted upside down and contoured to the wing.

48617347942_75cfe3a4c7_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

Wiggle a bit, draw a line, count back how many rivets, draw a line.  Try the other side.  Does it line up?  Has the nose shifted?  Wiggle a bit more. DRILL THE BLOODY HOLE!

48617204346_90b88b7d83_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

And that was just the inner struts.  Now for the outers!

48617330312_67576e9188_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

Now we are cooking with GAS!

The Launch Dolly in the Dragon kit has one Walter 500Kg booster rocket, the Classic book says four.  So back to bribery and corruption, I gave Tim the Fly booster parts from the Ar-234 and he came up with this:

48610853428_bc83bb7eee_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

Then this - nice 3d printed parts:

48624684567_dc952c5b45_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

I added the nose ring and the transit mounts:

48624681477_219fca3cc1_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

And started drilling the holes that are all over the booster.  And realised I'd drilled in the wrong place.

48624193266_cd37b42c3a_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

Something like this?

48624196203_01899431b4_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

Booster in primer.

48643003601_b37bbcb7cb_c.jpgUntitled by Bruce Crosby, on Flickr

And that's it so far.  I start painting the He-162 tomorrow, Tim is busy redrawing the boosters on his mega powerful computer.

Hope you like it.

Regards,

Bruce Crosby (with Wunwinglow, AKA Tim Perry)

20 hours ago, Kagemusha said:

Fusion make a 162 V tail, just in case you're interested

I thought of using either plasticard or the Urethane board to make the V-tail  but decided against it.  Although set after the real war's end, I didn't want it too far forward.  Plus the new tails would be more fragile than kit plastic and as they will be about 10" from the model base, they will be very vulnerable.
