AlanG
Nearly a 40% loss rate for actual downed bombers and total loss damaged bombers was a very costly mistake. Not to mention the loss of the crews on both sides.

ringleheim
It's always interesting to note that German arms production steadily increased as the war went on, and their best months of production mostly occurred towards the end of the war. That of course despite the deterioration of the Luftwaffe and allied control over the sky combined with intensified strategic bombing. You can argue the entire strategic bombing campaign, which cost tens of thousands of lives, not to mention the death and destruction on the ground, was a waste of time, or at least largely ineffective. Not the first time military planners got it wrong, and probably won't be the last.
