Phartycr0c Posted July 15, 2019 Share Posted July 15, 2019 (edited) Ok so some of you may know, I had every intention of producing a HPH Catalina in respect of this GB, and I must be completely honest, of late, I had felt a little burnt out with modelling, that and other "real life" projects getting in the way of any spare time. That said, I am now coming out to play but for various reasons I cannot do the Catalina as intended, (bearing in mind the 32 Sig table theme for Telford was Navy) I have now committed to producing the HK version of the Dambuster Lanc which Neil at HK has graciously made available for my to build in time for Telford. I now have approaching 5 months rather than the 5 weeks I had last year so hopefully I can 1. produce some sort of WIP as required by this GB, 2, savour a little more of the engineering involved in this kit and 3. produce something resembling the famous aircraft. OK so, the kit goes without saying, It is HK's brand new not quite to market yet, Dambuster. I will be adding only Petes Airscale panel set and replacing the kit guns withe the set from master barrels. Started the Airscale panels a while ago as a "standalone" model before even the Dambuster hoved into view. This is where I am at the start. So hopefully I can build and post as I have a very poor track record of WIP builds. Tons of Plastic. A full lancaster with the addition of the upkeep mine and launch mechanism, a second addendum to the instruction booklet and a set of decals representing Guy Gibsons famous special 464 Lancaster. Phartycr0c Posted September 25, 2019 Author Share Posted September 25, 2019 My god its an Update! Firstly let me apologise for a complete neglect of this thread. Two main reasons, My mojo has wavered a little recently what with life getting in the way and a change of working hours together with a new motorbike vying for attention, but now im getting the urge again. In line with the other Lancaster builds here, the Dambuster version is no different, in fact you can build both versions of the Lanc from this kit, the conversion comes with an extra sprue with the Dambuster goodies which are applied a little further on in the build. A supplementary instruction book points out the different build steps and parts required, so here is the update. The airscale panels have been completed together with the nav and radio operator stations. I have added some eduard belts for the highly visible pilots seat and will use the kits photo etch belts for the navs and radio ops seats together with the gunners positions. I really am not going overboard on the other interior detail from the wing spar back as it simply will not be seen, the main focus should be quite rightly be on the upkeep mine and associated gear, to that end, none of the engines will be exposed, the hatches will be firmly shut together with the flaps being in the up position. I have also adopted a somewhat modular approach. The wing structures are complete, the fuselage is just awaiting a light wash in the cockpit area before being buttoned up. The front and rear turret structures are in progress and the relevant bits have been cut out to accommodate the additional DB parts to include the searchlight assemblies, the front one of which sits in the aperture of the bomb camera of the bomber version. Just visible in the photos. On with the show. excuse the huge hair in this shot, it has since been removed! dennismcc Posted September 29, 2019 Share Posted September 29, 2019 Looking good, if it turns out as nice as your last Lancaster it will be great, makes me want to build one but alas I do not have the space to display one if I built it, mind you I do have a lot of other kits in the stash to choose alternatives from. I know where you are coming from as well, I haven't sat at my modelling bench for a long time, life is getting in the way and I also have a motorbike project on the way vying for my attention. Phartycr0c Posted November 15, 2019 Author Share Posted November 15, 2019 Ok Probably THE worst build thread EVER, I am pretty useless at assessing what is of interest to folks without boring them to death, anyhow the Dambuster is done. The additional parts sprues are very intuitive as to how they attach and convert the previous version, in fact right up until that part the build process is exactly the same with the exception of the inclusion of the searchlights. I have added a small VHF aerial unique to the DB version and that is it. She is complete, made an appearance at the IPMS nationals Telford and she now on display at the RAF Museum Cosford alongside her sibling. Even displayed alongside Mr Gibson, His dog and one of Grahams excellent Iconicair Upkeep and transport trolley. D.B.
