John1
Title says it all. I'm building a Korean War F-51D and these aircraft had the crap kicked out them. Here's an example of what I'm trying to replicate: What are your suggestions for something like this? Keep in mind, if it's a flat aluminum paint, will I be able to gloss it for decals and then overcoat to restore it's dull finish?
mhorina
I would try adding Tamiya Clear Blue to whatever version of Aluminum paint you are going to try and use. HTH Mike Horina
DonH
Looks to me like a very pale grey paint with a touch of aluminium added would be good for this. The clear blue is a good idea.

Out2gtcha
If you are foiling, some egg shells in with some pre-grained foil in water (shiny side down of course), for just a few minutes then a quick blast of flat or semi-flat. Works like a charm.

You can see areas where the stars and bars/codes have been scratched off, and the same gray looking surface is perfectly represented under them, with no change in color or wearing of the gray color. thierry laurent
A mix of very light gray or even white with aluminium will do the trick.

CharleyGnarlyP290
Is that a photo recon plane?
Lothar
I've used Gunze Surfacer 1200 and added various shades of their metallic paints for contrast for this (not LS of course but 1/48): Touched up a few areas with Alclad. Worked for me. Lothar LSP_Kevin, sandokan and Out2gtcha 2
Big Texan
Just paint it flat aluminum. Make a slurry of brown mixed with yellow and thinned heavily, and mist over the whole plane. Then, like suggested above, go back with a brush and add brown, tan, and rust washes to parts of the aircraft.
Bob MDC
I've been playing with Indian Ink it's water based a bit like concentrate wash you thin to what you want. Bob
