I couldn't help but noticing the articles about the event: F-35 disappears from radar near Japan.

Does that thing supposed to be on the radar? Does anybody remembers the joke: Stealth fighter, radar contact 15 miles to the north of...

Such planes are not always stealth and they are generally not during training missions.

By the way, many years ago, the F-117 got radar reflectors temporarily added on the airframe to reach that goal.

Um... it’s a stealth aircraft.  Why was it *on* radar?

To stop it crashing into other aircraft? To keep an eye on its position for reviewing performance? Because it was carrying external ordnance? Because it was in mechanical trouble? Maybe testing Luneburg lenses? Perhaps entering civilian air traffic space?

I would assume these aircraft are equipped with an IFF system so they can squawk an ID code to controllers in friendly airspace when needed. I would think the airspace around Japan is crowded enough that it would be needed.
