Was going to ask the same question.  I was convinced you had done a stippling type action with a stiff paint brush!  

 

Glad to hear their approach worked so well.  I think I will go in that direction myself when I do this one.

Thanks again all and yes Brian, that’s it. I thought I’d get all sorts of problems - inconsistent splatter and the odd great blob of paint but it was very consistent and, I hate to admit it, really easy to do! I thinned the paint a little and the air pressure is very low, but just takes a second of trial and error to get the setting right. It’s actually great fun. There’s a build thread over on WW1models forum if you wanted a little more detail.
