Looks like the Revell Super Hornet is out

I’ve got the kit, and Jake’s book.  I’ve spent much of the afternoon comparing pictures on airliners.net, which is a little more helpful as you can see the spine from different angles and in overall views, instead of in closeups.  My initial impression of the kit (actual kit plastic) is that it may not be quite as bad as the photos of the built up kit show.  Not sure whether it’s the black paint, or if they made some mods to the plastic from the test shot they used for the box and displays at shows, but it looks a little better in the production kit.

Some of the more useful shots from airlines.net.

I tend to agree, Dave, I don't think that the kit is that far out of whack (if at all). Is it possible that the spine has undergone some sort of transition, like the various avionics humps on the A-4 Skyhawk?

I haven’t heard anything about that, and it seems unlikely it would happen, especially for a just a subtle change.  The Skywawk avionics humps were bolted on top of the fuselage so they could be almost any shape and size they wanted, although I’m not aware of many changes on the Skyhawks humps, except maybe an extra scoop on the IAF -N models.  The SH spine is part of the airframe.

Thanks for looking up the pics, Dave. Looks to me the real thing has a larger radius to the edges of the spine, but not a deal breaker. Easily solved with some judicious sanding. Hell, I accidentally round off corners like that just building a model and filling joints.

I'm convinced the black paint throws off the perspective, but even though, the kit looks a little wide and edges not rounded off enough to my eye.

I am too. Its really amazing how much the black paint makes in appear SO much flatter and less rounded.

Looks like Sprue Brothers is taking pre-orders for the kit.  Who’s still interested, knowing what we already know about it?

I, for one, would be very interested. Unfortunately I cannot afford it right now.
