Models for a Movie

The last, finishing touches have been airbrushing some Tamiya XF-1 Flat Black, thinned with lacquer thinner and painting burnt sienna oil paint on the chipped areas. Below, I'm just starting to spray the 1:1 mix of XF-1 and lacquer thinner onto the forks. I chose to thin the black with lacquer thinner so that the paint would have some bite, providing the best possible adhesion to the smooth glossy clear.

My cell phone camera really did not like the lightning in the spray booth. The effect of the burnt sienna paint on the chipped areas does not show in the photos but it's noticeable in other lightning conditions and to the eye.

My good friend and fellow modeler Albert has also been hired by Dan to build some miniatures for his film. The three kits he gave him to build are two drones, the 1/48 MQ-9 Reaper and the 1/48 RQ-4B Global Hawk (both by Skunk Models Workshop), and a 1/35 M9 Ace Armored Combat Earthmover by Takom. Here are some pictures I took of Albert's work at Dan's studio.

Well, look who dropped by, the other member of the miniature team!

Welcome to LSP!

Looking forward to seeing some more of your work here, since I'm not on Facebook. I am a big fan of how you paint.

The requirements of the project dictate that all of the models have to be painted grey. It would have been nice to see how you would have painted and weathered the drones and M9. Dan and the computer will be doing that in our case.

Nice to see you here friend,

CoVid brought a temporary stop to the film production but the beat goes on. The shutdown actually provided more time for another model, which was started by Albert, a 1:35 Hobby Boss M1070/M1000. A stonking big model!

Albert took the build up to the point of step 9 for the M1000 trailer, before the project was handed over to me. He built the gooseneck and flatbed, no small task.

First off, I just had to sit down with the instructions and get my head around where the project was at and how to proceed.

Fortunately, there is a video build of this kit on the Sabre Models YouTube channel. Worth a watch if you want to tackle this project, there are a few gaffs in the instructions that are good to know about going in.

The next phase of the build was making the suspension and wheels. A big mountain to climb, since the trailer has 40. The M1000 has 10 independently suspended, steerable swing arms, with 4 wheels each. The sub assemblies are not hard to put together but wow, the time required for parts clean up is substantial!

There are 10 sprues for the wheels and suspension parts alone. The way I kept track of the parts was to lable plastic condiment cups, in order to make it easy, when I finally got everything cleaned up and could begin putting things together.

All the main parts of the trailer are now in primer. I have used Gunze Mr. Primer Surfacer 1000 and it is definitely the best primer I have ever applied with an airbrush. Mr. Primer Surfacer 1000 (not to be confused with Mr. Surfacer 1000) has the added attribute of being formulated to adhere to metal parts. Great for all the photoetch on this model. It sprays beautifully and is super smooth. Regular old Mr. Color Thinner was used to cut it 60:40, Mr. Color Thinner/MPS 1000.

With the ramps up, the trailer is still 18" long, so I chose to spray the underside first, let that dry, then flip it over and spray the top the following day. The wheels took almost as long to paint. Again, the Mister Primer Surfacer was such a pleasure to use. On a extended painting session, it is so nice not to have the material fight you with tip dry and the like.

The instructions would have you attach all of the hydraulic lines before painting. It looked to me like they would make the model harder to airbrush, so I decided to add them after the bulk of the trailer had been sprayed. The photoetch mounts for the lights were also not attached so that I would not nock them off during the initial spray job.

At this point, all of the other varied small details, like chalks, chains, springs, D rings, tow hooks, lights and more are being painted. Wheel parts are done too, ready to be installed.
