P-38J Lightning - Revell 1/32

I didn't correct any of that on my last build of this kit, either. I just figured since you were fixing some other stuff, you might want to consider it. I think some minor filing is all it would take to get them in shape. It will look just fine if you don't, though. One of these days, I'll have to take some decent photos of my YIPPEE version I did years ago. It was my first attempt at re-scribing panel lines, so they look like canyons!!

I painted some areas black and then did a light dry brush in white and a little metal.

It seems like the mid console should be black too, so I have to sort that later.

I had a quick session with extreme metal aluminium.

The rest of the landing gears will be painted in Hu56. Hopefully that will be enough to make a difference between the leg and the oleo.

I reworked the intakes some. Adding coolers and thinning the walls somewhat.

Now I only need to make the other one.

The cockpit got assembled.

I'm gonna put on a clear cote and then make a wash and some dirt.

I tried to make the sun screen look more like it's made of canvas.

Shadows and highlights will improve it somewhat I think.

The engine got a wash.

The landing gears and fire wall got a cote of Hu56

Will add some plumbing to the gear bays and also try to make something that looks like a gun sight.

Just adding more and more work it seems! :)

I added some plastic strips on the underside of the cockpit tub.

Just to cover the backside of the cockpit casting and to make the wheel well a bit cleaner.

I also started adding some plumbing to the wheel bay.

The engine was glued to the firewall and test fitted into the nacelle.

I was a bit worried that the exhaust pipes would make it too wide, but it seems to fit fine.

I hope it still does when I glue it all together.

There's no sight in sight with the kit so I made an attempt to make a look alike, or more wannabe perhaps! :)

I need to paint it and add the glass I cut out. Luckily Revells canopy is pretty thick! :)

If you take a ruler and place it edge on in a line from the supercharger forward over the engine area, you will see a hump that shouldn't be there. It should be level right to the point that the cowling dips to the nose. I know you want an OOB build, but if you are going to rescribe anyway, the plastic is thick enough to shift a few mm away.

The tyres could do with a Milliput (two part epoxy putty) 'shoulder' to bulk them out. Using a small bolt and chucking it in an electric screwdriver when filing/sanding will get you there quickly.

Thanks for the tips! :)

Way beyond ootb already! :)

Have to check with a ruler to see if I can find the hump you're mentioning.

I have Milliput. I'll see what I can do about the tires.

I opened up the shell chutes.

The sight got some color and a piece of glass.

I decided I wanted to have a boarding ladder, so I had to open up some slots.

I have a Trumpeter ladder and one in 48th that I will use as template.

Just need to figure how to build/make it. Looks like I need to order some square rods in the right dimension.

I cut away all the lids to the cooler, and trimmed down the rear edge quite a bit.

I couldn't find a pic from the top, but I assume that reshaping the curved edges will do.

I cut new lids from a soda can.

All four in place.

The cockpit tub was glued into the bottom mid section, and the top section was test fitted.

Looks pretty good, and I hope it stays that way when I glue it together. I had to add plastic strips to cover the gaps between the cockpit and outer wall.

I cut out fronts and rear ends to the coolers.

46187942865_77f0318876_b.jpg

Fronts in place.

The rear ones are also glued and I made the insides of the coolers to cover the holes. No see through here! :)

The other three needs some adjusting, then I can soon start assembling the fuselage halves.

Just need to paint the engine room.
